Here is a pic of the crankshaft. I know it looks off but that is just the angle I took the picture at. The markers on the lower timimg cover and crankshaft line up.



However, from what I read in my Helms manual, my camshaft pulley is not in the "up" position. It should be 180 degrees the other direction.



My car has been making a whining noise around the timing belt area. Yesterday at the ATM, the car shook a little bit then cut off. When I tried to restart it just made a whing noise. I have never dealt with the timing belt, but I'm pretty sure its not right. The belt seems to be in good condition. I can move it off the camshaft pulley, Is that right? How can the timing be off that much? The car has ran perfectly(besides that whining noise) until yesterday when it just cut off. Do I have a bigger problem of do I just need to replace the belt and set the timing?

I'm pretty sure your timing belt slipped big time, Try taking the belt off, bring the cam back to the up postion, then adjust the timing belt tension, and hope it didn't bend any valves

what are the chances that the valves are bent? and how would I be able to tell?

you can do a leak down test. I'm not sure thats what happend, I'm just guessing cause I'm not sure how else your cam gear would get like that. Put the geat back in place and try to start it

Before u do anything rotate the crank pulley one more time to where the cam gear is facing up ward and then check the crank pulley and cam gear i dont think ur timing is off

when the camshaft pulley was in the "up" position, the crankshaft lines were not visible. When I lined up the crankshaft with the markers the camshaft pulley "up" marker is where it is in the picture

so ur saying when the cam gear is in up position the crank pully tdc line is no where near the timing mark ? is that correct sometimes i could be slightly off, anyways if its still off i say redo the timing

yes .. when the cam gear is in the up position the TDC line on the crankshaft is no where near the timing mark

for one revolution of the crank pulley, the cam pulley does two.

edit: I missed the rest of th post below the bottom picture. If you can pull the timing belt off the cam by hand and reinstall it with ease, that's not a good thing. Sounds like the tensioner went loose on you. Hopefully, you didn't bend any valves.

I turned it 6 times and could not get it to line up, but i'll go try again

wth...no when the cam gear is at TDC your crank pulley mark should be lined up.

oops ahah for one revolution of crank pulley its only 1/2 of a revolution for the cam gear

make sure you're turning th crank counterclockwise. If your tensioner when loose on you and you're turning clockwise, the belt will slip a couple of teeth and continue as you turn clockwise.

i gave it another turn and was able to get the camshaft and crankshaft at TDC .. I feel kinda stupid for jumping to conclusions.

When I turn the crankshaft(counterclockwise) Its really hard then gets easy then goes back to hard. Is that right?

yup normal its all compression no check for spark and fuel and air

I can hear the air coming out of the valves

thats normal too valves releasing the compression i would check the dizzy most the them go bad especiall the igition coil

My alternator siezed up. I have never seen that happened, after I replaced it the car started right up and runs perfectly
