Hello honda-tech,

So i have a huge dilemma that has been bugging me for the past few months. To start off with, I got a 94 hatch with a b16a2 with hydro tranny, It came with a swap when I traded my 96 ls. current engine mods are dc headers and cai. My goal is 200whp all motor but I need a cost effective way to do it. I dont think its practical to dump money on a b16 (my opinion). I was thinking of buying a complete gsr changeover at hmomotors but if I do, I would only get about 10 hp and about $2800 off my wallet. Should I build my b16 or go with a b18c to start off with.

Would 3k be enough money to build a b16 to 200whp? Or 2800 to get a gsr complete gsr change over and spend about 2200 into the engine to get 200whp?

My cars purpose is for daily driving and I feel like b16s are so ****ing underpowered for some reason. Is this true for all you guys that have stock b16 on their hatch? How about the people who have experienced this kind of dilemma and went ahead and got the gsr engine because they think their b16 hatch is slow. Did it made any difference from going to b16 to b18c?

The difference between a b16 and a b18c is definitely noticeable. The torque on the b18c is much greater than that of the b16. I think it'd be worth it to spill the money and get yourself a b18c, and then work on it.

b16 with some bolt-ons and a 75 shot kit and you will be on top of the 200whp. and save money.....

any other opinions guys? I'm new to the honda scene and I would like to get a few advice before I make a huge decision.

just buy a gsr block and sell your block, then youll basically spend next to nothing and will have the higher torque then dump the rest of your cash to build it a bit

thats a good idea also and the b20 block will cost less than a gsr block so you might actually make money off swapping blocks..

To be honest, I have considered LSvtec and b20vtec but I'm a little scared to do a hybrid swap with reliability issues. Although I've read many guides how to make the engine reliable, I don't want to risk it because I'll be doing all the work. Also, I'm not really mechanically inclined and I could understand the concept of taking an engine out and putting in a new one but modifying the internals would be out of my league.

i would say stick with your b16. i have one and im hitting around 195-205. focus on the cylender head not the block. check out some of skunk2's head stuff. you could get a mani, throttle body, intake, and some injectors for under 1500 and be getting close to 190 or so. then get some stage 2 cams ( they arent to agressive for daily driving) and get a good tune done. that should put you around the 200hp range and spending less thank 3k

Buy a $500 d16z6 and then the rest into turbo. Second choice would be the b20v, with all the torque. Torque numbers make you fast not horsepower.

i still think a good one to consider is just getting a gsr block.. its still reliable if thats what your worried about because the gsr block is built to rev that high unlike the ls/v or b20/v

I would boost it.. B16's are really not the best platform for any serious power.. Adding a snail on a B16 and you have a nice powerplant.

Remember, its still a 1.6l engine and its not much faster than a D16 (single cam since your a noob)

Theres no replacement for displacement, B20 blocks are cheap and have better torque.

Forget what you hear about horsepower this and that..Horsepower is a made up number.
What you really should be looking for is torque!

If you want instant power and still keep fuel economy, throw a bottle on it.

Thanks for the input guys, I really appreciate it. If I ever plan to turbo my b16, will I be able to daily drive it with stock internals and low boost? and would it be as reliable as an all motor setup?
