I need some help
Today i went to the body shop to get my side skirts, side mirrors, and the back license plate cover painted to match my car but the guy told me that the paint will start cracking and peeling off in a year or so and that he doesnt recommend it and that i shouldnt paint it. Is this true? Most fixed up hatchbacks i see have them painted and i dont understand what this guy is talking about. Also that guy charged me a grip! He asked for $600 for the paint job. Is that too much? I have no idea.

I think you need to go find another paint shop. $600 for just those things and he says they'll probably crack in a year or so! For $600, that paint better outlive the rest of your car. I took the ghetto route, ACE Hardware $1.99 spray paint for my mirrors. Everyone thinks that my car came with painted mirrors and when the paint gets crappy I just respray it.

You are getting ripped off....big time. Unless your car is a custom color.. I dont see them spending more then $75 on paint and supplies since its only mirrors and side skirts. If they sand down all the pieces it should only take 1-2 hours. if all is done right... it shouldnt crack and chip at all. I think they meant all the bumps and scratces wil make it chip and crack.

get the paint code, go to the dealer or an auto paint shop, get something that matches in a spray can and a roll of wide masking tape.. Take the peices off, everything but the side trim on the front fenders comes off, that you will have to mask off. sand them, shoot them, and call it a day. It shouldnt run you over 35 bucks for the paint and tape.

Dont give up - keep going to different body shops... When I went to get my door mouldings (those stupid black strips at knee level that came on the 5th gen Lx's and Ex's) and my OEM-style fog light covers painted to match the body color, the first 2 places I went to said that they'd do it, that it would peel off in a year anyway, and that they wanted $250. The third place I went to not only agreed to do it, but only charged me $130, and told me that in order to get the paint to stay, they have to put a special adhesive primer coating on it because of the material. That was over 2 years ago. Not a single flake, chip or bubble has yet to show up...
Just keep looking til you can find someone that can do it right. $600 is a total rip off.
Good luck,
Steve
