You can pick up a JDM D15B vtec from hmotorsonline for around $600, the motors are guaranteed, then get some friends to help you install it. You'll learn a lot, I'm sure you guys could do it.

Sence when?
my friend got a completly rebuilt y8 in his coupe cost 1100, but it runs great, i mean purs like a kitten.
As long as it comes for a legit shop or person there is noihting wrong with a rebuilt engine.

go to a junkyard outside of city limits, like a little family owned redneck establishment and look for one like a b18b. found my b20b for 350. then just made sure compression is all good and threw a b16 head.

OP motors can be found through reputable businesses online for less than 800, and I'm sure you can find someone to help you put the motor in for some food/drinks. A couple free pizzas and drinks is enough to get the help you need.

That would be a great option, except there is a d-series engine and tranny sitting in the car now.

Your best bet is to get another Dseries engine... your not going to do a swap to a b-series for a $1000... even if you got the motor and harness and tranny for free it would be difficult to do the swap for $1000... Shop labor alone would be that... if you plan on doing it yourself to save money then you can put the rebuilt d series in as well so... Dollar for dollar spent your better off getting another d-series...
