sounds to me that either your thermostat is stuck shut not allowing the heated water to reach the heater core, or you have air in your cooling system. See if both the top and bottom hoses are hot after your car has been running for a while.

My g/f car has this issue too. Top hose hot, bottom hose cool. What causes this?
I have heard everything from thermo, to headgasket (how this keeps the coolant from circulating all the way through, I have no idea).
BTW: the fan does come on.

The way it works is water is pulled htrough the lower hose into the engine by the water pump. The water pump circulates water through the motor until it hits a closed thermostat, this allows the water in the engine to absorb the heat until it reaches a specific temp. then the thermostat will open allowing the heated water to flow back to the radiator and be cooled. If your thermostat is stuck no coolant will flow back to the radiator, so feel top hose after the car has reached NOT. If it's hot you probably have air in the system and have to bleed it out, if it's cool to the touch then your thermostat is stuck shut.

Ok, let me add this:
the car overheats gradually. its not real fast. I had my 2k1 civic overheat real fast when I wrecked it & had to drive it. It overheated in about 1-2 miles. This car will run ok it it keeps moving. If its hot (summer time) it will eventually over heat. If its cool out (so cal winter) as long as it moves it will not overheat. on the freeway it will run a little above the C. Sit at a light for 5 minutes. got to shut it off or else your above H.
My dad has the same kinda car & his heat stopped working. He replaced the radiator & it was fine after that. So I figure the things I will try are:
Thermostat
Radiator
If it still doesnt work. I am selling it. Its not worth more than that. Maybe I will try replacing the headgasket myself & then seeing what's up.
I really hope its not the headgasket or water pump.
Also, side note: her mom owned it before & it was leaking coolant a little bit & they were refilling w/ straight water. I am thinking ths attributed to the issue.

Re: (jinusang)
just an aside, my replacement (stock type) just came in today. waiting for the 'vic to cool off before i change. my old rad seemed to be clogged (cold at bottom hose)& subsequently overheated my engine. now my top tank is leaking fierce. this morning i filled it with hose h2o (saving a buck)& it overheated (super hot) on the freeway after 2 hours. coolant back in and heavy traffic, but an hour later i got home & the temp was barely above normal. after i replace the rad, i'll see how it runs. 100 here in the high desert today...

where did you get the new thermostat at? i did a test a while back with pep boys, autozone, advanced auto, napa, and OEM honda thermostats. and the OEM one was the only one that actually worked. all the others opened way to late.

Re: (jinusang)
You have air pockets if your heater is not working.. FYI the heater core needs hot coolant to maintain a consistant heat to be radiated off.
Now as far as the hoses.. It sounds like you have a bad thermostat.. (or could be clogged radiator) change it.. its very easy to do.

you can fill the rad. up and squeeze your rad hoses end to end. or let it heat up as hot as it'll get and crack the bleeder on the thermostat housing. until it shoots a solid stream of coolant.

I have always used advanced or pep boys thermostats, and never had a problem.

I wouldn't worry about anything major, if you say you have no heat, maybe your engine isn't getting hot enough to turn the fan on. Check the relay, and fuse just to make sure.

but hopefully its nothing....

Re: (jinusang)
its probably just air in the cooling system, you could remove your thermostat and see what it does. (it'll take longer to get to normal operating temp.)

Re: (jinusang)
You need to check your thermostat.. sounds like its sticking.. the reason why your fan doesnt turn on is because since the temp sensor is on the colder hose it will not make it turn on.. and your AC turns it on due to the condenser needing air flow
