hydrolock is scary shit
 

Well went to work yesterday and left my cold air intake on and it happened to start raining when i was coming home. Never hit a puddle but was raining really hard. Ended up sucking up some of that rain moisture and the car bogged. I started it up again and almost got home but died a few neighborhoods down. By now i know it had sucked up some water because i forgot to take the cold air off. So I have my dad tow me the rest of the way home so i wouldn't take the chance of further damage. Went home and the next day after work I screwed out the spark plugs and found out it was just damp but not soaked so it didn't suck up alot just enough to bog it. Then sucked that out with a vacum and thin hose and also in the intake manifold. I went and bought some new oil and did that and also sprayed some carb cleaner in the cylinder to help clear the water. Then i cranked it on and runs like a champ still. Lucky me no white smoke and good idle. Lesson is getting water in the motor is easier than you think. the few extra hp gain is not worth the risk of hydrolocking your motor.

Are you running your fender liners? I'm going to put money on it that you're not.

I'm in the Northeast (drove around 2" of rain yesterday) and haven't had a problem in 3 years; but my fender linings are on.

That only helps if the filter is fully submerged, to create a pressure drop and open the bypass.

The only cases of hydrolocking I've seen are driving through a huge puddle and submerging the filter or driving around without the linings on.

so you didnt go thru a puddle??

i have only seen hydolocking occur when it was more aapropriate to take a boat (more than a foot of water on teh ground), or when the driver had no fender lining. in 7 years i havent had an issue til i drove my wifes car with no fedner lining and hit a huge puddle in a 15 minute flash flood.

I blew my car like that hit a puddle and buh- bie lil engine

It took two times for me too learn not to ride with my cai during rain.Never hydrolocked,but it did wet some electrical stuff and would not start.Now nothing but the stock airbox. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

I have a CAI, and I still have my fender lining. Have never had a problem with water however.

I also run a cold air intake and have had no trouble yet......I live in Tennesse and we get shit-tons of rain here........Inner Fenders are the key......

This just happened to one of my friends about a month ago (hydrolocked - not just die a few times). Luckily he has a second car to drive for now. I have driven through crazy storms w/ my CAI on my EG & teh Type S w/o issues. The fender linings are still on, and I made the CAI as short as possible so that the filter is as high off the ground as I can get it. But, just in case I keep a short ram in the back of my EG since it's so easy to pull off a CAI in a rush.....

Do you have proof of this? I know its been said before but I have never once seen proof.

The bypass is also made of foam, so any water that is sucked into the intake will be absorbed into the foam of the bybass. So unless you get it it so soaked that the bypass cant hold any more. The bypass valve will be effective in any water situation.

The bypass is designed to open if the filter gets submerged in water, check AEM's website if you have difficulty understanding how it works. The foam has NOTHING to do with absorbing water that gets into the intake, it merely acts as an air filter for air that goes into the intake when the bypass opens.

Snow isn't fluid unless it's melted and turns into water, so it's safet to say that it's IMPOSSIBLE to hydrolock you engine driving in snow.

CAI's are PROVEN to make more power than other types of intakes period. As many others on here can attest to, including myself, who all drive in very wet climates, you WILL NOT have a problem or run any risk in hydrolocking your engine if you keep your fender liners INSTALLED and don't drive your car in DEEP STANDING water at least 12" or more. Anyone that has hydrolocked their engine has to have done one of these things or it's simply not going to happen.

Maybe 3-4 horses isn't worth it to you but to many others that understand that every little gain on a Honda is a big deal (unless you plan on going FI) you'll choose the parts that'll give you the best bang for the buck. Maybe you had your fender liners in but you sure as hell didn't hydrolock your engine just by driving in the rain, you would have had to get it into some deep standing water. Somehow the majority of us that use CAI's manage to drive for years without submerging our intakes in water...
