okay fine ill slam the explantion at you, the fuel level sending unit has a float on it, this float floats on the level of fuel in the tank, it moves the wiper arm of a resister, this varys a voltage on sone side of the 2 magnetic fields of the guage which indicate the level of fuel in the tank, when this resistence reaches an extreme, such as open circuit or short circuit, it is outside of the range that the guage is designed for, so that is why the needle went outside of the range. the problem is most likely the sending unit, but if you know how to use an ohmeter, then you can measure the sending unit, and move the float and watch the resistence change. if its good, then the wiring between the sending unit and the cluster is faulty. dont bash me for my typing skills, i dont care, dont come on here, ask a question, get an answer repeatedly, and then second guess those who helped you without even takign their advice. dont get mad at me we are all here to help, but askign for it and then questioning it with otu anything to base your statement is rude, do what i said to do, and by the way, when you test on the harness to the sending unit, one side should be a 5 volt reference, and the other side is a ground, if you leave the wires open, it will go one way, if you short them, then the needle will go the other way, do the corect wires dont short your opump out, remember your workign above fuel its flammable, and if the is dangerous to you, then stop, and pay a real man to do the job. if the needle move when you open and short the sending units wires at the pump unit, then the problem is within the tank itself. also, check for something hanging upt he float causeing it to strick at the top or bottom. bye
