Howling sound when in reverse? *UPDATE*
yes I did a search before you ask.....
When and only when I am in reverse, I get this god awful howling sound from somewhere under my hood.
I did a search and a few people stated either wheel bearings or it could possibly be the rotors.
The only wierd thing is.....when I press on the brake pedal while in reverse, the sound becomes twice as loud and I just can't make it out.
Anyone have any suggestions? Or maybe someone might be able to explain why the above to 'possible" problems above might be the cause.
Thanks.

Re: Howling sound when in reverse? (vtecvoodoo)
That's what has got me.
it's ONLY in reverse.
I just couldn't see how the if the rotors are warped, that it would only happen in reverse. As stated in another thread.
I don't know much about wheel bearings, so i couldn't even speculate on those.

you say it gets twice as loud when you put on the brakes..... have you looked at the brakes, maybe the pads are worn or are wearing funny.

The pads are wearing, but then why wouldn't it happen when going foward?
I plan on changing rotors and brakes soon, but I just can't think of why that would cause the problem. mainly because it still happens regardless if i press on the brakes or not.

Re: Howling sound when in reverse? (MLogan)
nope....totally diffrent one.
It's quite loud and sounds almost like taking two slabs of steel and sliding them across each other.

wow...
open your hood, have a buddy stand next to your car
drive past him in reverse.
and does it happen only when your moving? when you try to stop? or as soon as you engage reverse?

stick a screwdriver through the spokes of the front wheels and push the dust covers back. Might be a simple fix.

Re: Howling sound when in reverse? (Kamin)
it will happen while the car is moving fast and/or slow. before and/or after i brake.
It's quite odd.
I will try the dustcover thing when i get off work.
Any other suggestions?

i think it's the indicator somehow. my friend's 240 goes in reverse and when he hits the brakes, there's a loud popping noise. he knows he needs pads too. just something to try.

Re: Howling sound when in reverse? (vtecvoodoo)
ok.....last night I tried pushing back the dust covers for the rotors, but the sound stayed.
I have gone ahead and ordered some Brembo rotors and axxis pads which I will install on Sat.
Hopefully after I change those and bleed and replace the fluids, all will be great.
I will post what I find and if this actually solves the problem.

Re: Howling sound when in reverse? (all stock)
Is it only from one side of the car?
Mine was like that, turned out I had broken the lower caliper mount bolt, and the caliper was dropping and grazing the rotor

Re: Howling sound when in reverse? *UPDATE* (spektrum)
i found out what was causing the unavoidable squeking noise.
It was an extremelt warped rotor and worn down pad.
My passenger side rotor got so warped due to the fact that the break bads were almost no exsistant.....that when in reverse......my rotor would wobble into the actual brake caliper and make a screeching noise.
I changed out the 2 front rotors with some Brembo oem replacements and used axxis pads and the sound has now disappeared.
How this helps all the other people with the same problem.

Re: Howling sound when in reverse? *UPDATE* (boostedcivicsir)
this wasn't a normal howl......
This noise could be heard 2 blocks away from my car!
