Default how to tell if the tranny is good?

is there a way to tell if the tranny grinds without installing it? how do you open it and what tools do you need? im about to buy a tranny with unsure milage and i want to make usre that its in good condition

Sometimes its hard to tell visually. You would want to check the physical condition of the syncros. However scratches/chips can be unnoticable to you, but still cause a grind.

There is no real way that I know of. The best way is to slap it on the car and test it out.
