Excess dirt and grease, is sometimes a good indicator.

haha sorry to bring back this 028438435 year old thread..but how can you tell if struts are blown outside of the car? I crashed my hatch and the car sat for almost 8 months on donuts, so the car was extremely low. Before the car was crashed it rode great lowered all the way on gc's kyb's. now I just took them off, and when i push the struts in they come up very slowly..is this because they have been sitting all the way compressed for a while and need to just be worn back in...orrr are they fucked?

theyre fucked its supposed to be so hard you can barley push it down or at the most push it down less than half an inch but as you said im guessing u can push the shock all the way down so its blown

You generally test a shock by getting a corner of the car bouncing, and then letting go. It should stop within one bounce cycle (up then down, then stop) if it's any god. If it keeps bouncing, they're no good.
