An easy way is to stick a long screwdriver or something down into cylinder 1. Obviously the spark plug must be removed. Then spin the crankshaft and you will see the screwdriver go up and down. When the screwdiver is at peak height, your piston is at tdc.
Also there should be marks on your crank pully you could line up which will do the same thing.

the screw driver thing works and is a good idea, alot of mechanics will do this just to make sure the marks are right..
