how to switch off vtec and run 16v all time
i have heard that you can eliminate the vtec and make the motor run on all 16valves all the time instead of going from 12v to 16v @5700rpm. how do i do this? my motor is a D15B in a 97 civic ex. any tips? im not really a vtec fan. and i hate running on only 12valves, no power ha.

Maybe ask where you heard it from? It's a D-series. Pointless mod.

hmm, i figured if it was running on all 16v that there would be a bit of a power increase or at least a little bit more acceleration. my 87 lude was SOHC 16v and it had a lot more pull and it was all stock ha.

ive been thinking of selling the car anyway. i really dont like vtec. theres no power at all till it kicks in then when it does it doesnt really do much. vtec is a high school kids false sense of security haha!

you realize that as your car is only mapped to run on 12v's until the VTEC cross over point, you will lose power if you could enable VTEC constantly and it would run horribly

Re: how to switch off vtec and run 16v all time
OP since you haven't seemed to figure this out yet a vtec engine runs on 16 valves all the time. What changes is the cam profile at around 4800 RPM when it when it switches to a high lift cam profile (IE race cam) If you're familiar with aggressive race cams for V8s at all you'll know they idle like crap and suffer from poor driveability, the tradeoff being more power at high RPM. Vtec eliminates that issue.
If however you have a 3 stage D15B vtec yes it will run in vtec-e (12 valve mode) until around 3000 RPM and if you don't have the proper ECU it will run like crap. Yes you can feed 12v to the vtec-e solenoid so it stays in 16 valve mode all the time.

the smog tech i showed my motor too said it was a regular vtec not 3stage. i only have one solenoid. the engine is stamped D15B and the head is stamped P2J-4 with 96 stamped to the right of it. the guy i bought the car from put the JDM D15b in it. i didnt notice till after i bought it i thought it had the D16y8. i was greatly disappointed when i found out ha. i also didnt know that i am now going to have to referee the motor and ive been reading that no ref will approve a jdm motor right now.

The JDM D15B comes in a couple of flavors. The one you have is the equivalent to the D16Y8.
So, in truth, you aren't missing anything. Not that I know what you were expecting but if was some kind of Nightrider turbo boost when VTEC kicked in, like most people do, then you were mistaken.
