How to remove Pinion Assembly from Manual Steering Rack??
Anybody have any tips on how to remove the pinion gear/bearing assembly from a 92-95 civic manual steering rack? I have the rack stripped of everything except for the pinion gear (and the rack gear, you can't get it out until the pinion is removed). I tried placing the rack in a vice, a pair of vice grips to the spline coming off the pinion gear and hitting it with a BFH, and it won't come loose.

I don't see anything in there about removing the Pinion gear from the rack? Also the PS rack is quite different, that whole assembly around the pinion gear would make it alot easier to remove because you could hit it with a hammer.

92-95 civic rack. If the exact year matters I'm not sure, this is an extra rack I bought today that i want to modify, not the one out of my car (92 CX).

Re: How to remove Pinion Assembly from Manual Steering Rack??
^ I basically did that earlier and it didn't work. Just tried it exactly as that picture describes, didn't work. I'll give it another shot tomorrow. I think I'm going to end up cutting the end off the rack gear so It can be removed and then trying to push up on the pinion gear from below. All I'm really interested in is the actual case.

You did everything in steps 6 - 8?
For example, did you remove the 35-mm snap ring? Can't see that in your picture.

Did that exactly. At the point of smacking it very hard with the 3lb hammer that I need to worry about damaging the actual case (what I actually need, everything else is being replaced). I think cutting the rack gear and pushing up from below will work. Too late to use the angle grinder now.

^Huh?
Read the thread, all I want is the case for a project. Bought this rack for $50 and it worked perfectly.

Success! Cut the end off the rack gear and slide it out of the case. Tried using a flathead screwdriver as a pry bar from below but that didn't really work. Tried it in the vice one last time, hit it as hard as I reasnobly could with a 3lb hammer and after a couple hits it broke loose. Beat up the outer edge of the lip a little but that shouldn't matter.
