HOW to: Paint brakes.

As the front wheel bearings on my daily abused/driven civic started to fail I knew it was time to replace them. The best option was to go for the integra upgrade. I called up Import Auto Salvage and spoke to Larry Jr. Three days later and with a thinner wallet (weight reduction...eh...) my brakes arrived ready to be primped and prepared. Normally these brakes can just bolt onto the sub-par stock civic brakes but I chose to show off my new calipers with some hopefully non-ricey red paint.

Here's what the UPS man brought:

What you don't see in detail is the excellent packaging that went into the shipping of my new-for-me brakes.

Here's what the Calipers, Steering knuckles, and Upper Control Arms look like just before the paint booth/porch.

These are the tools required for the job:

I sanded the calipers and the Steering Knuckles with the wire brush and made sure not to get rust dust in my eyes using the proper eye protection.

After sanding I taped everything up and gave them a couple coats of paint.

Here's the final product.

what the hell are you using adjustable wrench for? I don't recomend it.

The adustable wrench was used to take the fitting off of the "car" side of the brake line. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif

oh nm then, I never replaced the hoses. just used stock ones and placed some spacers between the two bolts that hold the line.

has anyone ever seen or heard of painted rotors or can you even paint them? if so looking for some black ones

Re: HOW to: Paint brakes. (blacksniper)

The rust on stock rotors that have been sitting for awhile is easily removed after a session of braking, think of how easily paint will come off. The rotor will not remain the same thickness.

On a side not, congrats with the brakes, I rounded off the one of my bolts on my rear caliper and broke the front caliper brake. I'm sure you will have better luck, as I was experiencing a bad day. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

Well, it took me awhile to find some more free time but I started swapping the integra brakes onto my civic. Here's the progress with side-by-side comparisons:

sure you can paint them!

do i recommend it? no.
will the paint last more than time of hitting the brakes? no.

yeah i agree.

I bought some rotors from carbotech, great rotors btw. They were painted, looked great brand new, now they look like they would if they weren't painted in the first place. Only $42/ea. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

Here's what they looked like new though, **Bling**

Painting any parts of your brakes https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emthdown.gif

...MAYBE just the middle of the rotor to get rid of the rusted top hat look.

Mike_C 08-17-2004 11:13 AM

i assumed the previous poster was referring to painting the entire rotor https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif the top hat? sure, but the rust/grime will take over after a short while.

painting the contact surface = stupidity (assuming it vastly reduces the coeffecient of friction)

i don't see anything wrong painting the hat though

pdiggitydogg 08-17-2004 11:17 AM

this is what I use to paint calipers
