That's with older bias-ply tires. Radial tires, directional or not, are supposed to be rotated front-to-back, not crossed. It can cause uneven wear and slipped belts inside the tire, I've seen that happen too many times when people cross-rotate radial tires.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Tire rack still seems to recommend cross tire rotation.

It takes all of 5 minutes if you have a lift. In reality it depends on the tire. The lower the treadwear rating the more often you will want to rotate. Same as if your car is slammed. I like to stay around the 3000 mile mark, but 5000 is usually recommended. The proper rotation is the drive wheels go straight and the non-drive wheels cross, i.e. our wonderful FWDs; fronts go straight back and rears cross to the front.

That's 10 minutes. 20 max. That's not really a lot of time.

Ok, It might not be a lot of time, but seriously. Who does it twice a week? That's like changing you oil every week. It's unnecessary.

It depends on how he drives. If he hits every corner hard then it's necessary. During the autox season I rotate mine weekly.

I love your front lip btw. I'm thinking about the same one for my coupe.

Correction: The fronts cross to the back and the rears come straight forward. And yeah, i guess if you have a lift it wont take more than 10-15 mins, no way its gonna take five. but if you've got a lift and nothing better to do, why not rotate em so often?

And for those of you who believe that rotating your tires is pointless, you're wrong. You think just replacing the fronts when you have to is fine, but in reality if you rotated your tires every say, 6 to 10k in the end chances are that all four would last longer, and while you have to spend to replace all 4 at the same time, in the long run you save money by replacing tires less often. And plus... having 4 new tires at once is so much more official than having two brand new tires and two old ones. Now if you're on a budget and can only afford two tires at once, thats another story. Over time you'll still spend more money. And crossing radial tires is fine, I've been doing it for years and never had a single problem, that's why tire rack recommends it.

No. The drive tires go straight. 5 minutes is very possible with a lift if you're using an air gun. When I worked as a "tech" this one other guy and I would crank out 4 changeovers in 8 minutes. He'd mount the tires and I'd balance them and mount the wheels back on the vehicle.

http://www.goodyeartires.com/faqs/Driving.html
Regular and proper tire rotation promotes more uniform wear for all of the tires on a vehicle. All season tires should be rotated in a "modified X" pattern, meaning only the tires being moved to the drive axle are crossed to the opposite side of the vehicle.

The remaining two tires are moved from the drive axle to the free rolling axle, remaining on the same side of the vehicle.

This method of rotation helps promote a more even and uniform treadwear pattern for all four tires.

Rotate every 6-8 thousand miles. Drive wheels get moved straight forward, (or back), and non drive wheels get crossed front (or back). FWD - Fronts to back, rotate the rears up, RWD - Rears straight to front, Fronts crossed to rear. This way every tire gets a the chance to ride on a different corner of the vehicle. Also AWD/All-time 4WD - Cross fronts and the rears in an x-pattern.

This is true. Be careful and watch what youre doing. On my teg I had my tires backwards (rotating against the 'arrow' that is imprinted on them) for most of the summer and they wore out very quickly. They are pretty worthless now.

8 minutes? impressive... i was considering the time it takes to pull the car in, get it up and rotate. 5 mins? i guess its possible, sweet then.
