Well, it's supposed to be filled right to the point of spilling....But how much fluid is that?
2.5 quarts?

what happens if it is overfilled. is it terribly bad? cuz i ususally put more than the point to where it spills. i put a little extra because my tranny has a small leak.

What fricken port are you guys filling it in!?!
1.8 Quarts.
The fill plug is on the side of the transmission not the top.
You park on a level ground and pour using funnel until fluid starts to come out and then put the bolt back in place.

Re: How much tranny fluid to refill a D16Y8? (SOHC_MShue)
There seems to be a lot of variance between the answers, like between 1.8 qts, and 3 qts. I need to know the exact amount, cause im gonna be filling the tranny from the top of the transmission by taking out the speed sensor ( i think that's the assembly up there).
Anyway, this method is very easy because there's just one little bolt up there, and the sensor comes right out. A funnel can then be lowered right into the hole, and the tranny can get refilled a lot easier than running a long hose down near the axle. Plus, the car can be nice and level, since a corner of the car won't have the be jacked-up when refilling.
I know it sounds kinda weird refilling from the top, but there was a very nice informative post with detailed pics about how to do this. i can't seem to find it right now, but i'll try to keep looking for it.
Thanks!

I dont' think there's such a thing as Honda MTF.. I spoke with several Honda Automotive techs and they all say just use standard motor oil, 10w30 or 5w30. However, ATF, is supposed to be from HONDA..
Everytime I've had to fill tranny fluid was becuase I was changing the axle or the tranny.. I just fill through the axle hole until the oil starts spilling over. I've tried the other way with the smaller hole, and it's not as easy. just cut off a 3-4 feet section off an old water hose and fit it to a funnel.. works just fine.

Re: How much tranny fluid to refill a D16Y8? (redlinetuning)
This is the way to do it. Level off the car on jack stands. Buy 2 quarts of HONDA manual transmission fluid. Drain the tranny. Put the plug back in. Take off the filler bolt. Fill it up until the fluid comes back out. Thats how you know its full. Oh, and HONDA does sell MTF. Not recommended to go with some other crap just spend the 3.00 a quart and do it right. CHILTON manual page 1-39 states its 1.8 quarts to fill.

If I had a digi camera I would take a picture. In my room I have 3 quarts of "Honda Genuine Manual Transmission Fluid" <= MTF. ATF would be auto tranny fluid.
If you need proof, call up a Honda dealer and ask for a price on something. Then read them this UPC code: 786102101028, or 08798-9016.
Also, you might want to see if these Honda techs actually work for Honda.

I went to a Honda dealership back in my Accord days to get some MTF, and they said I could use regular engine oil, but I did buy their "MTF" but it didn't say Honda MTF.. that was what, 6 or 7 years ago.. besides.. it was Wisconsin.. bunch of hicks working anyway.. so whatever.. i'll humor you and take your word for it.

Re: How much tranny fluid to refill a D16Y8? (nd8ch)
I just fill it up until it is over flowing...pull the funnel out...put the plug in...the tranny will burn the fluid it doesnt need
