How much to fix my motor?

I am told my crank bearing is blown. I have a whirring noise when the car is running. Any ideas on how much it is to replace? I think this is the worst case senario. It could be belts also, but I have a feeling its a crank bearing cause I leaked oil.

You could be looking at a lot of money, chief. If it is the bearing, and you've been driving around on it for a long time, you might need the crank machined or replaced if the damage is to a great enough extent. But blown rod bearings don't cause you to leak oil. That's something more like a gasket problem, or your piston rings could be allowing excessive blow-by. Your whirring noise could also be a bum water pump- are you experiencing over heating? Belts make squeaking noise when they're not properly tensioned.
Help us out, tell us your motor that you're running, that could help in some manner

Ok it is a 97 lx, pretty much stock motor. 86k miles on the y7. Whirring problem started about 4 weeks ago. I drove for two days before changing the oil with penzoil high mileage and a fram filter. Around the same time my temp guage got stuck at about 1/4 the way up so I do no know for sure it is over heating. Could be related or just a coincedence. The noise seems to be coming for the drivers side of the motor. I may be able to get a sound bit of the sound of that would help. My friend whos parents own a paint shop, but knows a damn lot about cars said his first guess is a blown crank bearing.

Oh and here is a very important part i left out, when changing the oil and filling up the bottles for dissposal, i only filled 1.5 quarts back up.

Ouch. It could very well be rod bearings, then. SOHC's are somewhat notorious for oil consumption, but I don't think I've ever heard of any one burning over a half a quart without catching it. When was the last time you checked/changed your oil?

It was creeping up on the 3k mark on the last oil change. I was at about 2.5 k before I caught it i guess?

Bummer, I'm not quite sure what to tell you except that I hope it's not too bad. If you're not going to do that yourself, labor alone will be more than to buy another SOHC from maybe a junkyard, or if you're lucky, someone here on H-T might have one. Try taking that to the dealership or another reputable shop and get their opinion. If they say blown rod bearings, I would say consider getting a new motor. Sorry for the bad news

Good Luck man hope it works out

Re: How much to fix my motor? (Poopie)

I really can't do it myself becuase I simply don't have time and a spare car to drive to work. School starts in 2 weeks so that doesn't leave much time to engine search and to pull my motor out. How much do you think I can sell it locally or trade it to a dealership towards another car? I HOPE $2,500 - $3,000 and I'll be happy. I know its a long shot though...oppinions?

Re: How much to fix my motor? (Poopie)

Yes, that's a long shot. Pretty low miles, though. I guess it's feasible, not likely, but a possibility

Yup. thats depressing. Would it be possible to conceal the noise so I can trade it in at a used dealership? hahahaha Its unethical but god damnit i have school books to buy.

ok, so since my temp gauge won't go past 1/4 up I decided to take some temps after some local driving (20 minutes worth). Block temps are about 270, vavle cover temps are about 250, exhaust temp is close to 600. Sound normal?
