Default How Much Do I Need?

well, summers coming up, and i hope to get my motor soon. i currently have around 2500 saved up. i plan on doing a USDM GSR swap. i already have a skunk2 catback exhaust sitting in my basement. i just had a few questions on how to go about getting all this done. The shop that i got my shocks/springs i think does motor installs for 500 or so.

first, i was told that my CX doesnt have a cat compatible w/ my exhaust or something to that extent. how much will it cost to get a new cat for my swap and exhaust (does the swap come w/ a cat?)

second, i think i should get new brakes at the same time, or soon after i get my swap, because my current brakes are pretty crappy. for a nice set of front and back integra brakes, how much will i be paying? (including install)

third, i have a friend who says he can get me a full GSR swap for 2000 flat. assuming this is the case. how much extra money should i save up (including what i listed that i need above) just to be safe in getting my swap completely done. I was thinking i should wait till i have at least 3000 before getting into a swap.

on a sidenote, i have another buddy who has a JDM GSR motor w/ about 30k miles on it, that he'll sell me for 2500. what exactly is the difference between the JDM and USDM GSR? and is 500 dollars worth the performance difference?

you dont really need to upgrade the brakes because ive got friends with gsr swap in their hb and their brakes work just fine and i think if you have around 3k you should be fine unless you have to replace some things on the motor then you might need more

Well that swap is usually $3500, from a reputable company. If you want to trust your friends, that's your decision. People tend to forget about the small things that add up quick when doing a swap. Might as well do the timing belt, and waterpump while the motor is out. You'll want fresh oil, filter, belts, plugs, fluids, etc. It adds up quick. You'll also need rad hoses I believe.

Your cat will probably work fine, but it will also be nice clog in your system. And yea, dont worry about the brakes now, save up all the money you need for the sway along with aprox. $1000 extra at least for all the misc crap you will find you need. If you are mechanically inclinded, doing the swap yourself is pretty simple. Hardest parts being the bitch pin on the linkage and the wiring of the VTEC lol.

JDM motor has slightly higher compression that the USDM Counterpart. Buy a low comp headgasket and save 500$. And i would definatly recommend buying from a reputable company.

i know someone locally that has a usdm gsr for 2500 with 90k miles. let me know if your interested, you dont need a brake upgrade but its a good idea but not nessesary. i have an ls turbo in my vx and it stopps good with stockie brakes. you can get a carsound magnaflow cat converter on ebay for liek 35-55 bucks shipped and you have to have it installed. its not a big deal at all

3500 is overkill for the gsr engine no point, but an LS you'll be better off and then buy boost. Its so sweet.

Your getting an engine and tranny also right...? If so, you won't be using your stock CX clutch.

if you want to get rid of your tranny and shirter and shift linkage email me with a price I'm stuck with a auto and it blows. The only way I can pull power is manually shifting..found out it's not too great of an idea. So if you wanna get rid of them email me.

Most likely yes... you probably want to replace that also.

The swaps for the breaks is a lot of money for something that, unless your at the track, isn't really gonna make that much of a diffrence. If you have good brake pads (I use Axxis) and some nice rotors (I use brembo) your car will outbreak your tires any day of the week anyhow.
