Default How To Lower HC Emissions?

Hi,

Trying To Get My Ej1 D15b With A D16Z6 Head To Pass Smog Failed On HC (Hydrocarbon).

Anyone Know Any Tricks To Lower It?

Any Advice or Opinions is Greatly Appreciated
Picture is Attached of Recent Emission Test Results.

What did you change between the two tests? The first one was running obscenely rich. The second one is probably also too rich. You should look at fuel pressure. Check that the engine warms up to operating temperature so it goes closed loop, and that the ECT and IAT are within spec measured with an ohmmeter. Also inspect the spark plugs, if one is different from the others (like black), that cylinder may have a bad injector.

Remapped The ECU, Changed Catalytic Converter, Adjusted Ignition Timing to 16 TDC, Replaced Fuel Cap, Adjusted RPMs to 650-800

Fuel Pressure is about 35 idle, Today i Realized The PCV Valve Was Badly Clogged & Replaced it Not Sure How Much of A Impact That would Be.

Thinking of Cleaning Injectors, Doing a Oil Change, Using 91 Octane Gas & Trying again in A Week. (i'm in California)

Thoughts?

- Your Much Appreciated

Anything else about the engine that is not stock? Can you run a stock ECU?

DC Headers, AEM Short Ram, Believe That's All, Right Now.

Stock ECU is Possible But Would Have to Purchase one (P28 or P08) *
Previously was running it with H22 fuel maps & got it Remapped To Stock D15b Maps. [P06 Chipped & Converted VTEC]

Valve Cover Gasket has a Tiny Leak Gonna Replace it.

Cant Remember When i Changed Spark Plugs But Their Fairly Cheap So Might Do it Again. Wires are Brand New.

Update: Cleaned The Injectors, Took Off The Distributor Cap For Visual Inspection.

Realized The Rotor Wasn't Screwed in, The Screw Was Off in The Cap Bouncing Around, Screwed it back in Made It Stable,

Had To Adjust Timing Again.

Tomorrow: Replacing Wire-Set & Spark Plugs Along With a Oil Change, & Valve Cover Gasket, Then Gonna Try Smog On Monday.

Thoughts?

Had a similar problem years ago, I had my injectors cleaned/rebuilt locally and it solved the problem. Best guess is that they were so old and gummed up that they probably never fully closed when they were supposed to.

P06 Chipped & Converted Vtec With Stock D15b Basemaps.

Monday i Will Update With New Emissions Test Results.

Changing Spark Plugs & Wireset Tomorrow, "Maybe" Clean Crankcase Breather Oil Catch Pan Box, Oil Change & Re-Adjusting Ignition Timing Again if Needed.

Valve Cover Not Leaking Anymore Since Changing The Clogged PCV Valve.

1st Test: Bad Catalytic Converter, H22 Fuel Maps Running JDM D15b mini me, 0 ignition Timing, Bad Gas Cap, Oil & Filter Change, RPMs 1k+ Idle, Cleaned Injectors FAILED (GROSS-POLLUTER)

2nd Test: Replaced Catalytic Converter, Remapped ECU For Stock D15b Basemaps, 16 TDC ignition Timing, Rpms 650-800, Replaced Gas Cap. FAILED ONLY (HC)

3rd Test: Replaced Clogged PCV Valve, Putting in New Spark Plugs & Wireset, Cleaned Injectors, Fixed Distributor Cap & Rotor, Oil Change. RESULTS TBD..

Not To Mention The Things i Had to Do to Get The Check Engine Lights Off..

check the cap good, i had a rotor screw come out once and it wasted the pickups

also not hating but where you getting your maps from, there are some good guys in the ecu forum, you might see if they can take a look at the test results and see if they think its a map issue,

user 0mtber is a good guy and run phearable.net

looks like you replaced the cap

From A Local Tuner, Hes Not So Bad Alot Of People Recommend Him, His Base Map Was From Crome For The Jdm D15b.

The Screw Did Fall Out Never Would've Known If i Never Took The Cap Out To Check, Rotor Was Still On Somehow, Screwed it Back in After Not Seen Any Visible Damage.

My Hopes Are High For This 3rd Smog Check & The Smog Shop is Giving me 2nd Retest After Paying Full Price For Just The First One.

3rd: Emissions Test Results.

i'm Thinking The Catalytic Converter is Defected Or The Oil Breather Box is Clogged. Any Thoughts?

Flash a totally stock map, or remove the jumper so the ECU runs stock firmware instead of from the chip, or use a stock ECU.

Things I've asked you before: Coolant temperature proper (193 degree thermostat installed and working)? Valve adjustment good? Any signs of misfiring? Any difference in color between the spark plugs?

ignition timing?

its a p06 converted vtec and chipped um by removing the chip will vtec still work for CEL

i did a whole ignition tune up spark plugs and wires cap and rotor. i really wouldnt know about the valves.

coolant temperature is fine, no overheating.

while changing spark plugs #4 had alot of oil in it but that was due to my valve cover gasket that i replace.

i just had surgery so now i gotta figure it out and then fix it when i can

Non-VTEC ECU will run a VTEC engine just fine except of course the VTEC will not work. But it won't throw codes.

About the temperature, over-cooling the engine will increase emissions.
