Default How long does a stock Cat. Converter last? (300,000 Miles ???)

Someone gave me a used a 95 Civic DX Coupe stock Cat. But his car had 384,000 miles on it. Not much rust, I'm in Southern Cali.

How do I know if it still good?

When I shake it, it does not rattle, and it very cloudy when I try to look through it.

Any help is apreciated.

If you can look inside it and nothing looks melted or blocked it should work just fine for you.

If you try to look through it and you cant then its good. If you could see your hand waving through the other side then its not worth it.

O.k. looks still good, I cannot see my hand.

Also, would the OEM Honda DX Cat. Convert restrict too much air flow?

I also have a 01 USDM ITR Cat. Converter, should I use that instead?

Isnt the ITR cat. like 2.5 or something while the DX is about 2 inch or less. Look to see which one is bigger and go with that. Atleast thats what i would do.

go to the sniffer and find out.

BTW, I just failed emissions because my cat was bad. It met none of the above criteria, so I don't think this is a science.

Why would you want to switch cats anyway? I mean, do you have a swap or something?

Yeah I do, it's 96 Jdm ITR motor.

Anyways, I was on the high way the other day doing roughly around 50 mph and I need to Gun it so a Big Rig wouldn't hit me.

So I down shifted to 3rd gears and the car jumps to 7700 RPM. Then I notice sound grey or black smoke (at night time cannot tell) coming from my exhaust in my rear mirror.

So I'm think bad cat or maybe going bad?

I think the USDM ITR Cat is 2 inch in diameter. But is the ITR Cat. better in air flow?

AHH I think you perhaps are giving some wrong information. The inside of the CAT looks like a honey comb and you are suppose to be able to look through it if you point it at the sky in day time. Although you won't see right through it (because of honey comb shape) you should be able to see some light on the other side. If you can't then you know it is too clog up inside and mean that you won't have any exhaust flow..

I'm in Cali, it sucks.

If you have an ITR motor wouldn't it make sense to run an ITR cat. Hope this helps you.
