How to improve gas mileage?
What are some good ways to improve the gas milage on a civic, other than driving like a granny. I know that performance spark plugs and wires will help, but will anything else help? For example will headers and exhaust help, since the back pressure is reduced and engine doesen't have to use extra power to push out exhaust? Does cold air intake help gas? Anything else? Thanks in advance

Depending on which ones and your state of tune, they can certainly help your mileage a lot.
Of course the easiest and best way is just to take it easy on the car.

dude performance sparkplug wires do nothing but degrade your performance,
stick with stock.
i've got a pet peev about this one...
cant believe how many ppl buy these things when its proven that nothing out performs oem wires, talk about hype..

I am with you on that...I put OEM back on a while back and it feels smoother all around. Idle is better too. Hotwires are on eBay now. lol I had a Honda Master Tech (not working @ Honda) tell me the same thing quite a while back as well.

-intaKE will lower mileage by alot.
-exhuast helps, but barely (u get like... 0.5-1 mpg extra)
-don't drive over 55 mph. (minimal drag)
-is it auto or stick? stick gets better mileage
-tinted windows help, (lowers temperature of the interior, thus less wear on ur A/C)
or just turn off AC all together
-drive with the windows up, to make ur car more aerodynamic
-don't tailgate, because stop and go will make you burn up gas
-don't peel out, accelerate too quickly
-don't rev over 2500 rpm. shift around 3000 rpm
-reduce unneccesary weight (take out the spare/backseats/dash, keep car clean, don't drive ur fat girlfriend around)
- make sure ur tires are properly inflated
- don't lower ur car or get big *** rims
- take off power steering
- don't warm up ur car (warming up car is a myth... u're actually just burning up gas)
hope that helps.

Rims will help with but, it throws your speedometer out of whack but you'll notice a increase in gasmileage because of the diameter of wheel is bigger. If you have a Hatch back you'll notice more aerodynamics, but if you have a coupe get a wing and set it for 0 zero downforce for best aerodynamics. Trust me I've driven around with out a wing on the high @70mph and without and you do notice a greater aerodynamics.
And the best RPM to MPH ratio is 70MPH for most USDM tranmissions...I drive long distances and I know...

tailgating: you never heard of a draft? tailgating is a bad idea but it will still improve gas mileage if your 5 ft behind a trailor.
warm up the car: do your homework, open circuit vs closed.
if your shifting at 2500rpm then how would you rev to 3000? i can only assume downshifting.
big rims and lowering the car. rim width matters and weight matters and so does diameter when you consider tire weight but something about the rest of this post makes me think you never considered that.(mainly the fact the the majority of tires that have the same diameter weigh within 3 lbs of each other regardless of rim diameter, therefore the rotational mass on larger rims is pushed out). you are going to have to explain how lowering the car hurts fuel economy.... cus that makes no sense.

WRONG
An intake, header, exhaust will allow the air to flow better increaseing your gas mileage... Also if you get a VAFC or similar device you can lean the bitch out, gain gas mileage but you'll be running hotter?
most of this is minimal...

Re: How to improve gas mileage? (Grimm)
the best way to way to get better fuel economy is to
a) get an economy engine/transmission(i know its all relative but then again so is "good" fuel economy)
b) drive easy...no more than 1/4 throttle, shift before 2500rpm, and do not exceed 70mph.
try all these things on just one tank of gas, youll be surprised.
i have tried monitered how much other modifications helped my car out and this is roughly 70%highway 30%stop go. i also drive just shy of 400miles a week so these things really matter to me. d16z6 sedan btw and i fill up around every 10 gallons so its basically trip/10.
in order:
exhaust: less than 2
intake: probably the same difference between shifting at 2500rpm and 2600.
from stealies to gsr rims: 1-2 mpg
on the sedan theres a dumb lip on the rear bumper... cut that:less than 1mpg
alternator belt was squeeling and it was time for new plugs/wires(ngk):2mpg
keep in mind the belt/wires/plugs shouldve been done much earlier
the car is gutted and lowered but i bought the car like that so i dont know what gains to attribute to what. after everything i just mentioned when i drive on massive road trips with cruise set just under 80mph i get just shy of 40mpg. and with the daily commutes i get 35 mpg although this week i did good and got 36.
unless you really care about my methods for obtaining this data dont read the rest of this post.
the rate of modifications were done approximately 1 every month so i took the average of the miles miles per tank for each of the 4 or 5 tanks in that month.
or
(miles1+miles2+..+milesn) /n*tank=average mpg per month

Dont' drive at all, using a bicycle helps a lot, and car pooling is another way, or public transportation,
Or you can hitch hike everywhere and give people head for their services.

Let's see
1. Don't drive use a bike...? That is 0 mpg.
2. Car pooling...? 0 mpg when you are not driving and 3 extra fat *** lazy people when you are.
3. Public trans... 0 mpg
Thanks for helping this guy out with his question.

Warming up your car is important. hoping in the car and just taking off will lead to excessive wear on the motor. You need Oil pressure and your oil needs to be up to temperature. so everything is well lubricated. this is how u will spin a bearing i know i did it all the time now i warm up the car for at least 2 minutes to be sure its all good

Re: How to improve gas mileage? (JDMlifestyle)
My owners manual for my 98ex says that you do not need to warm up your car for more than 1 minute. Any more and you are just wasting gas, regardless of the weather conditions.
So I basically hop in and go. However I use good oil, oil filter and take it easy until the engine has gotten up to normal operating temp.

Re: How to improve gas mileage? (barto)
From personal experience, I can say that getting light wheels will definitely improve your gas mileage. Rotational mass is extremely important. My 5-lug conversion (w/ ITR wheels) killed my gas mileage (on my stock D16Y8 engine), so next on my shopping list are lightweight wheels.
Also, intake, header, & exhaust will improve gas mileage if you don't change your driving habits. But, if you're revving it up to hear that intake/exhaust note at every stoplight, you won't see an improvement.
