My temp gauge never goes over 3/8. Sometimes I think it's broken. Once the car's all warmed up the needle goes up to 3/8 or real close to the 1/2 point and just stays there til I turn the car off.

Not sure if it is even a problem. The valve cover does get very very hot after I drive around for like 20 mins (after warmed up). The headers get even hotter (duh).

what did you use to measure the temp of the engine?

also what was the ambient temp?

You need this to figure out temp. I think your meter was messed up because that's a pretty high figure.

Your temp gauge should never pass the middle, otherwise, better check for a faulty waterpump or leaks.

I have a raytech laser infared temp gauge. Its pretty damrn accurate. Ambient temp was probably int he mid 70's. I have a whirring noise so it might be a faulty water pump. Will I have to replace the whole unit?
