Default how does this work?phantom grip style lsd

so this weekend i picked up a b16 tranny for 200 bucks. the guy said it would not go into 5th so i cracked the case open to have a look when i got home. the syncro set for 5th was shot but i also noticed this while removing the internals:

ive seen these before on ebay but i dont know how they work really. this is what im pretty sure im looking at (images from ebay)

can anyone tell me exactly how this thing works? just looking at it, it looks like it locks the spider gears together when centrifugal force pushes them apart.

any info would help, thanks guys

To be honest with you if you didnt get any info off of the auction, I would say your assumption sounds pretty good. but try to pry the two cases apart and see if it locks the spiders together. thats wierd I havent ever seen anything like that

I did a little research on these a while back when i was looking into lsd setups. Apparently, from what the forum told me, they really don't work. Why I don't know, thats just the feedback I have read from other members. I could of sworn I searched in the archives and found that info. I would say do some archive searching.

Pure junk. Remove it.

Disc plates exert equal load against spider gears using spring pressure to control the amount of slippage at the wheels. Helping to accelerate quicker, while sustaining higher speeds through corners.
Phantom Grip offers 100% locking in hard acceleration. When torque is applied through acceleration the disc plates pivot, locking spiders, causing both wheels to exert equal power to the road, providing less torque steer than an ordinary differential.</TD></TR></TABLE>

For fun, you can read:

Theres tons of information on these, just by searching google.

it must be nice to find a tranny with an lsd for next to nothing... are you putting a 5th gear out on an LS in there.... that would be smart seeing yours is blown....
