please explain how a v-tec motor works

When you hit a certain RPM the cams fill with oil and a larger lobe is used to increase efficiency at higher rpms.

Pretty much it.

Let it be known that lowering the vtec engagement slightly increases power gains in very specific instances on high performance motors. Lowering the engagement on a stock motor will often result in poorer performance. Emphasis on slightly, 2-300rpms usually.
