how do you tell if you need to change your fuel filter?
My car (92 stock vx) sputters at low RPMs, but pulls well when you get on the throtle. I am wondering if the "sputter" is from a bad fuel filter? Also, would a bad fuel filter reduce MPG?

hey whoobeedoobee I would buy a helms manual they have alot of pictures that have step by step info on just about everything you could have a question about. Theyre cheap too.
All I really know about that is that it is cheap and easy... oh yeah it also near some fuel lines

I didn't have a problem changing the fuel filter in my 98ex. You just need a couple of wrenches (12, 14 & 17mm IIRC). Also, a few shop towels to soak up the leaking fuel.

Re: (92lxsedan)
just make sure to break the bottom bolt on the filter free before you unbolt it from the firewall or you run the risk of crimping a fuel line. the nut on the bottom of my filter was touch as HELL to get free when i changed mine...

Mine was doing the same thing, so I went ahead and changed the fuel filter and spark plugs. Do you notice a decrease in fuel efficiency? Mine was getting horrible gas mileage, worse than could be attributed to me revving the snot out of it at times. After the filter and plugs, it is much better in that respect. I may put a fresh air filter in, Im not sure how old the one in there is right now, so that may help as well.
BTW, none of this is especially difficult to do. Just remember to de-pressurize the fuel system before you unbolt the old filter. (Pull the fuse on the fuel pump, and something else you have to do that I can't remember at the moment.)

Thanks man.
R/g gas mileage
it is still respectable at 30 mpg, but I know this thing should get more.
I bought some plugs on my lunch break and am going to change those tonight. The airfilter looks pretty clean, but I may replace it anyway.
I will wait to see how that works for mpg first and then tackle the fuel filter if it doesn't get better.
Thanks again, I appreciate it.

open your gas tank, crank the car, pull either the relay or the fuse and let the car run until it cuts off.
