Default How do you remove the crank pulley.........

.... if the crank pulley is partially loose and the key fell off?

I have an impact wrench but it doesnt seem to be able to do the job. And i can't use a breaker bar because the engine just spins freely. Can i just stick a pry bar somewhere to keep the engine from spinning?

strong *** screw driver into the starter slot. Connects with the flywheel and it wont spin.

Check the Faq's, its in there

hmm never thought of that one. I recently bought the snap-on adapter thats similar to whats shown in the pic above so now I can actually torque my crank pully to the spec and not have to worry about it...

don't put a screwdriver in the flywheel, i've seen people mess it up and break the trans casing .... which is way more expensive and more stress than getting one of these http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ...28013

I would use a chain tool. It wraps around the pulley and keeps it in place. Then you can use the breaker bar

you guys dont understand.... because the key is missing the crank pulley is just free-wheeling. The crankshaft pulley tool will not work.

THat should hold the engine, no?

Even if the key's missing, you can still hold it. The pulley has teeth on it. The key is there to make sure it is in the right position for timing only purposes.

on my accord we used the tool and a breaker bar. used it again when we torqued it. i think like earlier someone said, put it in gear and have someone hop on the brakes and turn baby TURN!!

Alright first off don't use the screw driver method, your just asking for a broken flywheel by doing that, it happens more times then you would think, just use the tool to hold the pulley and be done with it. The chain wrench is NOT a substitute because you will leave small burs on the pulley which will damage your belts.

Now you said your key way is either missing or damaged. So you would need to put the car in gear and hold on the brake pedal while someone else takes the bolt off. There is anther tool made for holding the flywheel in place now, it almost looks like part of a gear and bolts to the motor, now its meant to be used with the transmission off of the engine so I don't think that would help you.

nevermind, i finally got it out. removed the starter and wedged a prybar between a small gap between the flywheel and pressure plate.
