I bought a 98 civic EX and was told by the owner that it was VTEC, when i showed it to friends they told me that it wasn't vtec and they showed me the name of the block, it said d16y7, the head looked like if it was changed but i am not sure if it was. Is there a number on the y8 head that says identifys it as a y8?

If it says y7 then no VTEC. but if someone swapped the head then yes. Look for the VTEC plug. If u dont know wat it looks like then just floor it and see if u get any extra pull at high rpm and little louder sound. If its slow consistently, no VTEC for u. Dealers dont know wat they are talking about. They tricked u.

Okay, here's the deal:
The # your friend's showed you is for the block only. What he could have done is what's called a mini-me swap is where you take a VTEC head and put it on a non-VTEC block.

The BLOCK might be a Y7...but the head might be a Y8 (VTEC).

VTEC is all in the head (haha) - the block has nothing to do with it.

Also, I feel it's important to note that NOT ALL VTEC ENGINES SAY VTEC ON THEM, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO SOHC MOTORS!!

So, you can look for two things, first off, the throttle body (where the intake arm comes out of), does it point straight up towards the sky, or does it point to the passenger side of the car. If it points towards the passenger side of the car, that's a Y8 manifold, if it points straight up, it's a Y7 manifold. Though that's only the manifold and the manifolds are interchangeable. So it still doesn't tell you anything.

So we'll go for definites. When you're looking at the motor from the front, look at the left side of your head and you'll see the distributor (where all your spark plug wires go to). Right above that there should be a little weird looking piece with a greenish/camo top. That's your VTEC solenoid. You can't fit one onto a Y7 head so obviously if you have one it's a Y8 head.

If you want just take a few pictures of your engine bay and somebody could tell you for sure.

The "engine code" that your friends showed you is for the block only, D-series heads are interchangeable and a mini-me (Y8 head on a Y7 block) is pretty common, it's like bolting on 25hp.

Grab some pix, post 'em up, if you can't post 'em, Holla at me and I'll host 'em for ya. Honda motors are designed (most of them, not all) to make power in the upper portion of the RPM band, so your car's gonna pull hard anyways the further up it goes.

Very true. But correct me if I'm wrong, all DOHC VTEC engines will say VTEC on the valve cover, no? I can't think of any of them that don't. b16a, b17, b18c, b18c5, b16b, H22...

No, you're right.

I worded that poorly. All DOHC (that I know of) that are VTEC say VTEC on it. Though in terms of SOHC, they all don't say VTEC on it - some do - some don't.

LoL - in all honesty if it's not for an exhaust note change (in which an aftermarket exhaust is needed) I can't tell the difference between VTEC and non-VTEC on a stock SOHC if the engine's outputting close to the same power.

Like my friend had a D15B7 that was moded probably up around the same power as my Z6 - and with the exception of the noise pitch change, I couldn't feel jack **** of a difference .

Thanks, I have a thing on top of the H that comes out like all the y8 pictures I have seen, but i wasn't sure if mine is a y8, i know the intake manifold is a y7 for sure which i will change eventually, but as soon as I can I will take a picture of my engine and then I will know for sure if its a y8 or a y7

to my knowledge only 94 and 95 d16z6's came with VTEC on the valve cover.

The solenoid looks like a little gold or brass colored soda can. It's only a couple of inches tall.

Thanks guys. I was asking b/c I test drove a 97 EX the other day for a DD. I was slow as *****. I guess it's hard to judge though when you drive a TSI.

To make a long story short I didn't buy it b/c the FR caliper froze up and started to smoke.

the real way to know for sure, if it's y8 (not z6 or y5) is to find the stamping on the head that says P2J-(7). not sure about the 7 but i don't think it matters. only a y8 head will have this stamped on the casting. the y7 would be a P2A.

i think it's on the exhast side above the #3 cylinder port.

You mean intake?

I could tell the difference between my non-VTEC and VTEC head. If I floored it on the parkway with the non-VTEC head, the car would barely move. I'm not saying the VTEC head makes it THAT much faster, but at least now I can merge without dying.

Exactly, so why turbo a "turd" and not something stylish like an 08/09 Civic SI/Type-R?
