How do you install pads on drum brakes?
Need to install them asap, got the pads and all but I don't know how to do it. Did the front ones no problem. The rears, I have no clue as to how to get the drum cover off. Is it pretty much self explanitory after I get the cover off? I was told that there are some springs inside or something, anybody have pictures? Any help is appreciated, thanks

lol you cant install pads in drum brakes only on disc but you can install shoes on drum brakes.. lol .. take off the whell slide off the drum and if it doesnt come off spray so wd-40 around it to loosing it up and hit it with a hammer then its all you from there its a little hard to write everything so i wont.. take one apart and put it back together the same way it cam off.. tkae the other side off and leave the shoes intact so you cango from one wheel to the other incase you forget how it looked.. and stratching the springs suck be prepared or some blood blisters if you havent done them before.. good luck!!

Your smoking crack if you think this is a good thing. You might want to check yours, they should be worn plenty by this time. If not worn, I would be willing to bet the springs are perhaps weaker and the shoes themselves might be debonding from the backing...
Anyways, don't use WD-40 on your brakes... PLEASE. Very bad idea. To get the drum off you will need to make sure your ebrake is not on, then use a rubber mallet to tap it off. If this fails then you can use two bolts in the provided threaded holes and back the drum off this way.

trust me, they are worn, but still have plenty of material left.
I check the shoes in March of each year as prerace season checkup.
A tiny bit of anti-sieze on the hub, the drums come right off each year.

If all else fails, when i was in auto shop and we couldnt get a drum cover off my teacher would hit the lugs (not the lug nuts, but the place where you put the lug nuts on) with a hammer, and hit the sides of the cover with it and it would loosen off.

Mine had 160,000 miles before i changed mine... and i only changed them cuz i felt like it, I coulve just adjust them and gone for a few thousand more...
If u think about it, ur car stops with 90% of the front only... You use the back mainly for just keeping the car in place when u park...
so yea, check if u still have some meat on them shoes...
EDIT: and i know they never been change, because this was my moms car before it was mine and she bought it in 1993...

I have never changed my rear shoes they are originall factory since 95 and i have 111,000 miles on the car now and still have plenty left for 30,000miles.
edit: find you a bolt and see the spot which has a hole in it thats where you put a bolt (don't remember what number) but as you tighten the bolt the drum starts coming off, when you try to remove your drum don't forget to let your handbrake down please

I HATE CHANGING MY DRUMS!
i swear i'm going ot get cancer now it was the biggest pita. i promised myself i would never do it again. then again i didnt have the right pliers to do it all with so that might have contributed. those springs are a pain to get into place. i am glad i'm doing my rear disk conversion this weekend (hopefully)

Re: How do you install pads on drum brakes? (94TealCivic)
you could use a hammer or you could just thread a couple bolts into the threaded holes right near the lugs and it backs itself off. I know too many people that dont know the proper way to use a hammer and end up beating the hell out of things.

The bolts needed to take off the drum cover are 8mm. You should also buy new return springs if you are changing the shoes. They cost around $5.

we did this at my old school, which had an auto class, and it was a ****** bitch. so many little parts and springs . . . . sucked. i would have someone else do it. or save up and get some teggy or si rear discks.

to be honest, when I hit 4000 posts, well, search it.
Everyone was bragging about there post counts.
I'll let my KNOWLEDGE and not my post count determine who is correct.
I could have my post count reset, but would it change anything??? NO.

Listen to mista bone... If he can tear tranny's and motors apart like he does I'm pretty sure he knows what to do with his brakes...
<< 1996 Civic HX
87k miles... Have done my front brakes twice and the drums are still factory ones that havent been replaced.... There is plenty of material left on them, all I do everyonce in awhile is take the cover off so I can let all the drum dust out (which is always alot... and check if the little black boot is leaking....

Re: How do you install pads on drum brakes? (EE_Chris)
I did a drum to disc on my 97 hx at 70k miles and I'd say there was about half meat left. Whenever it would rain though I'd go to a parking lot and do e-brake turns all day, so that probably wore them down a little faster than they should have
