Default How do you clean dirty trunk??

I just got a civic sedan 97 and the previous owner did not take care of it and the trunk is a mess. It is covered in some black gewey stuff that hardened and some parts of it sort of soft also. If you guys know what I'm talking about, how do you clean this up? Will simple green do the job?

its in the trunk where the spare tire is and all around the trunk, there is no carpet back there or anything just a spare tire and pure nastiness

The only way he'd have anything black in his trunk on a '97 Civic and the material be stock is if the car is black and it's the sound deadening. I don't know why it'd be gooey and soft though.

If someone had oil spill in the trunk, then the sound deadening material would become gooey and soft.

that is sound deading my friend the best and quickest way is dry ice but if you want you can use a chisel hammer and wd40, trust me use the dry ice the chisel takes alot longer and is alot messier.

You DEFINITELY had an oil spill in there at one point. You might find that if you scrape the stuff away with piece of plastic, it will come off quite easily around the areas where the oil spilled. The oil itself softens the material AND makes it separate from the metal. For the rest of it, you will need dry ice.
