how do i unlock power from my d16y8 cheap n easy??
i have a stock d16y8 with only high flow cat back exhaust, stock manifold. stock intake. is there ways to cam or stroke or ecu tuning to get some more ponies?? also sometimes she idles very low like say around 400rpm after shes hot?? ne ideas suggestion thank you!!

Stroking isn't cheap or easy. A cam isn't going to net you much either. You say "some more ponies," how much is some more?
re-sleeve, light weight rods and pistons, higer compression like 12:1, customs ground cam, Honda S300, CNC ported head and manifold, custom tubular header.

"some" people say a header and cam is "some", others consider dropping a fully built GSR turbo motor running 12lbs of boost on e85 making over 350hp to be "some" more power.
So, ditch the SOHC and take out a huge loan to build a sweet motor.

There is no power to "unlock" from a Y8. Its horribly slow and lacking in NA form. You want to do anything to it then you should be considering boost... If you don't have the money to boost it, swap it.

yeah, youre not going to get much of any power out of your y8 without a turbo or nitrous oxide. id suggest an engine swap.

Well it depends how much you can spend.
But if you get a cold air intake and header and keep the engine maintained well (valve adjustment, oil changes, etc.) then it should be pretty fun and kind of quick.
Or you can take it a step further and build up a turbo kit for it, building a na d-series takes alot of work and usually costs more than a boost setup.
Or you can swap in a B series or something.

Unlock power from a D16Y8.....maybe 10hp if you spend $600....i would not bother!
As others have mentioned, swap out for a b series. The parts are so cheap these days, and it is such a huge upgrade

NA + D series + cheap and easy power ..... that simply does not happen
Hell, even with a big budget, making power on a D series NA is not easy
The ONLY way to make power on a D series without mortgaging your house for money is to boost it. In stock form, 200-220whp is possible safely on the stock engine. For more, check out a Vitara/Eagle build.

If you're looking for okay power and some more fun...
1. Decent intake
2. Decent head
3. Test Pipe
4. Decent exhaust
5. Higher rev limiter.
The biggest downfall of of the y8 is how long third gear is, stretching second a little farther will let you clear that gap. I had a 7500 rev limiter on a xenocron basemap and hit 14's. Not fast but it was definitely fun while it lasted.

^ agreed, there is no such thing as a cheap AND powerful N/A D series. and even if you take the cheap out of it........it takes ALOT of money and research into parts and machine work to get the right combination of things that give you a significant amount of power.
if you want to keep the D, make more power, and keep it relatively cheap......you gotta boost it.
BTW for everyone's information..........nitrous is not N/A.........it accomplishes the exact same thing as boost.....by getting more oxygen into the cylinders which combined with the right amount of fuel.........gives you more power.
i will add that a Y8 can be a very FUN engine with some basic bolt-ons, I/H/E, IM, cam, and tune will liven up the engine some......not fast, but it will still be fun.

Those mods you listed above will also net a whp gain of maybe 5-7whp...with a great tune. And over-revving a stock motor is NEVER a good idea, EVER. the limiter is there from the factory for a reason.
OP unless you are willing to fork out the cash for either a swap or forced induction your goal is simply out of reach. Too many people think an intake header testpipe and exhaust will yeild 20 "more ponies" and they are sadly mistaken. MAYBE on a Kseries, but unlikely.

$500 turbo kit from ebay if ur tight on money and want easy power...u should easily get around the 200whp
area with a good build, orrrr u could swap in a z6 or just the z6 head and notice a difference

yeah...it was dirty. header was off of an obd2 car, the o2 in there hit the hood so i bent it lol primary was at the collector.

uhm dont say do you wanna see a time slip show it. you know he's going to ask and so am i. i find it hard to believe unless its gutted. i fail to see how 110 whp maybe beats out 155.
turbo as said. otherwise you'll be lookin into b's which are wicked fast in comparison for the first few months til you get used to it.

Chill I'm not talking out of my ***, I many vouches for that motor and 10,000+ posts on here but I was recently banned...I can't explain the motor, I'm not looking for explanations. It blew up anyway.
There was absolutely nothing in my car except for doorpanels (manual doors), dashboard and driver side seat. Srs was removed, 12k/10k rates preloaded f/r, no bumper supports...I hit a 15.2 with a 2.3 60' and partial interior but wanted to hit the 2.2 60' so I could nail a 14, and I did.
I swapped in an ls w/ a gsr trans and I can faithfully say that I am NOT going back to a D ever again.

I completely agree. My old y8 was stock besides I/H/E and it was sloooow. I've got an LSVTEC now, (semi-built 12.1 cr + cams & other stuff) and its MUCH better than the y8. If you want to stay SOHC, boost it. Don't build it NA unless you've got some cash to fork over

I call bullshit. No way a y8 ran a a 14 sec pass unless there was juice going through it , or if it was built/turbod. in order to run a 14 it takes in the area of 165whp with a good driver. Getting 165whp out of a NA y8 isnt easy and will take 12.5-13:1 CR and a big cam etc. Im not here for bench racing nor do i care, but my stock b16 ran 15 flat on street tires. Your y8 wasnt faster.
Those motors are 160 to the flywheel stock...this motor laid down a whopping 145 whp on my dyno so I fail to see how 165 hp is needed to run 14s...
I'd say a 14.99 pass with a good running motor, a lightened car and a good driver could be pretty easily obtained.

you can buy a sick *** aem intake and some headers. that'll give you around 120 more "ponies". but if you have a fat girlfriend all that will go away.
