Default how do i test my compression?

i'm thinking about buying the tester, but am not very mechanically inclined. i'm learning as I go along here. what are the steps? am I over my head or is this a simple task?

Compression ratings should be in your haynes manual under engine specs. Easily found on the interwebs too, i'm sure. somethin says 160psi give-or-take, but i don't remember so don't quote me.

buy the tester
pull off a plug wire
unscrew spark plug
screw in compression tester
turn the engine over (by hand with a wrench maybe, i think starting the car or turning the starter on will blow up your compression tester.)

someone else will come along and clarify what i just said, but those are the basics. don't quote me tho, i'm not liable if you f^ck something up

you must disable the ignition coil first otherwise you run the risk of destroying your electrical system if the spark plugs touch your car (its a good idea to wrap them, too) and the fuel pump cause you dont want the fuel injectors pumping oil into the engine when its not igniting, it will flood and could damage the tester too (possibly?)

the best way would probly be to pull the fuses, but i cant seem to find them on mine, so im not sure. if the bastards who stole my car in Jan didnt take the manual and fuse diagram (for some stupid reason!!!!), im sure I wouldnt have this problem

also, you can crank the engine from inside the car, as long as you make sure you crank it the same number of times for each cylinder (eg, 5) and do the above.

i sure don't want oil to get pumped through my fuel injectors! yikes!

... lulz

when doing a compression test, do so with the engine as close to operating temperature as possible. pull the fuel pump fuse and run the car till it dies. now disable ignition and remove the spark plug wires. then remove all 4 spark plugs. one cylinder at a time install the compression tester and crank the engine at WOT for about 10 revolutions. do not tighten the tester with a tool, only HAND tight. if you find that your numbers are low redo the test with about a tablespoon of oil dropped into the cylinder. if the numbers go up a fair amount, your cylinder walls and/or rings are worn. if the number is mostly unchanged then the leak is likely though a valve.

here are compression numbers for the y8

minimum 135 psi
maximum 185 psi
max variation 28 psi

50% off? pihh, i can do ya one better lol

autozone or advance auto will rent it to you for free. now you pay for it up front, but it's all returned when you bring it back. now if you want a compression tester to keep indefinitely then i guess going your route would make most sense lol.
