Default How do I test my clutch?

Hello,

I am worried my clutch is going. (I should never have let a girl touch my car...)
I did some searching and I can't seem to find a good answer on how to test your clutch.
Only thing I got by searching was pull the hand break and go into 1st then let the clutch up go up slowly and see how long before it started to slip. i can let it go pretty fat and it feels like it wants to go but i dont know if thats normal. My first Car and first manual

Tell her she either owes you a clutch or a weeks worth of sloppy head?

Get on a level surface and put it in 2nd gear and try to start off. It will be pretty shakey but if it does get the car going, then your clutch is still in pretty good shape otherwise you may need to replace it soon.

Better to do it in 3rd. 2nd gear starts arent difficult.

Especially since the transmission puts the most load in 3rd.

wouldn't I be raping the clutch by starting it on 3rd?

Eran> I get a lot more than sloppy head

another way is similar but do it in 1st gear with the parking brake on and slowly releasing the clutch while giving it gas, if it stalls the clutch isnt slipping.

Just beat on the car and do full throttle shifts, if the clutch slips going to the next gear than you know it's getting bad.

not really. you want the car to stall pretty much as you're trying to slip it. if you're able to drive off with little to no problem then your clutch is going/ on its way out.

to be honest with the cold weather finaly came (It was +10C till this week -20C now) I am stalling a LOT more often.
At low speeds on uphills its stalling...
and with hand break on and i let go it keeps trying to go and car starts to move (I think i need to change my back breaks...lol)

Drive at 35 MPH with the car in 4th or 5th gear. Stand on the trottle. If the clutch slips it needs replacement. If it does not slip. Then try a smooth start in 1st. Does it shake/shutter? if it does every time then the pressure plate or the flywheel is danaged. The flywheel can be machined flat again but the presure plate can only be replaced. If you do replace the clutch be sure to have the flywheel machined smooth. Replace the pressure plate, clutch disc, and release bearing.

Completely let out the clutch...should be going like 4mph....then BASH the pedal all the way to the redline.

Seriously, that's the best way, that's where you're going to acquire maximum torque on the clutch. Not in 4th or 5th.

If it's slipping your RPM won't rise steadily, they'll "jump" up a bit under what should be relatively uniform acceleration.

well, you have more tq at the clutch in lower gears because of the multiplication of the gear, which means, when in a higher gear there is even more load on it.

most of the time a clutch slips its at higher gears not lower.

I sell clutches all day long...the way I do it is...

Pull the e-brake, push in the clutch, rev the motor to about 2500-3000 rpms and hold it there. Let the clutch out at about the same speed you would when starting off from a light. If it kills the car, it is NOT slipping. If the car keeps running, it's slipping.

I don't know man, that doesn't make much sense to me.

It doesn't matter if you're in 4th or 1st, 4k RPM is 4K RPM. You simply have more torque in a lower gear. If it's going to slip I don't see why it would slip in a higher gear over slipping in a lower gear where you apply more torque between the clutch and the pressure plate. Wherever there's the most sudden torque is where it's going to slip. It's going to get the heaviest sudden torque from nailing it in a low gear.

EDIT:
I'm just using common sense though.

I've never burnt out a clutch nor killed one (so to me I guess).

just bone out at full throttle and right before you hit redline, powershift and if it slips, then new clutch is needed....make sure no cops see you...

the way i do it is pull the e-brake up. put the car in second gear let go of the clutch very slowly and if the car turns of its good. if it does not then you need a new clutch.

when i was testing mine, i put it in second gear at about 20 mph, pushed clutch in, floored it and let off the clutch.

rpms went. 4, 5, 6, 7k but i was still doing 25 mph!!!

you will know if it slips alot like mine.

at that point its painfully obvious that the clutch is going. its a duh sign that its waaaay past "on its way out"

a lot of stupid unnecessary ways to do it being mentioned in the thread.
