shouldn't be hard. all you need is some MTF(Honda MTF most preferrably, stick to OEM grade)(buy 4 qts. just to be sure), an injecting pump(not quite sure what it's really called)(to fill your new fluid in), an oil can, jackstands, necessary metric tools and probably a new tranny bolt(aka drain plug)(if required/ needed).
1. jack car up.
2. locate tranny bolt(drain plug), it should be easily located(bottom of tranny assembly, and almost the same size as an oil pan bolt).
3. slowly loosen the tranny bolt, and remove it.
4. flush out the existing tranny fluid. make sure you use an oil can.
5. clean up the tranny bolt (i can't recall if they come with washers).
6. fill the injecting pump with MTF (Honda MTF) in th filler hole.
7. slowly pump the new MTF in. fill until it starts to over flow.

and vwalah!

this should be an annual maintenance done.

any suggestions or comments please fill me in.

i personally think c-speed has a better how-to, and they have visual aids.

I didnt think Manaul transmissions ever really need the Fluid changed unless it leaked or something was wrong with it.

tranny fluid change is done annually under my PM's(preventive maintanance). it is good if you PM your car stock or not, that's just me. i wanna keep on doing some PM stuff, as so i can learn, and who knws, when i get my transplant, if all goes well, i'll do PM's on those too

my tranny fluid change on a 96-98 civic is required annually, i'd say the same for any civic.

Yes, you need to change your tranny fluid every 30,000 miles or so. If Hondas have a weak point (and no one is perfect, not even Honda) it is the synchros in their trannies. Once the miles begin to rack up, many owners get a notchy feel to their shifter and then a grinding. By this time, it's too late and the tranny needs to be replaced or rebuilt.

As for fluid, use a fluid that is specifically designed for manual transmissions. Honda used to recommend motor oil (usually 10W30) years ago but that was never a good idea and the newer oil formulations are not designed for gearboxes at all.

I use Red Line MTL in my '95 Civic. I love the shifting feel of this stuff ... especially on cold mornings. Until recently, I thought this stuff was the best but I've had a few Integra GSR owners complain of grinding when switching to Red Line MTL so I thought I'd throw that out there. It's a possibility with some cars.

However, it is still all I'll use in my cars and I retired an Integra with over 180,000 miles on it using Red Line MTL with a great feeling shifter and no problems.

Honda recomends every 30,000 miles or two years, whichever comes first.
