Default How to change tranny fluid?

I remember seeing a very good DIY on here, and I was just wondering if anyone can post the link? I tried searching but didn't have luck with any threads with pictures, like the one I am referring to.

Thanks in advance.

Use a ratchet to unbolt it and put it through your VSS(Vehicle speed sensor) 2-3 Quarts Syncromesh.

Thanks man. Couldn't I just fill it through the fill hole on the tranny?

The fill plug on my both of my B series are 17mm I believe, it may or may not be the same on a D series

I also believe it is a 17mm, can anyone confirm this? Anyone know the drain plug size?

Drain plug has a square hole (for lack of a better term), insert a 3/8" drive rachet to remove it.

Fill plug is 17mm for both D and B-series.

This write up is about replacing axles, but it also shows how to replace trans fluid:

Perfect. Just what I wanted to hear.

Is it possible to do this without taking off the tire? Only reason I am asking is because I am at school, and will be doing this on the street. I believe my jackstands are at home..

Yes, no need to remove wheel, last time I did it I didn't even use jackstands.

Very good to hear. So I can do this using just a jack, 3/8 drive wrench, and a 17mm socket?

Now, next question. Is it possible to do this without jacking up the car? My car is stock height.

Yes, you can do this with all 4 wheels touching the ground, as long as you have a container (to catch the old oil) short enough to fit under your car.

On a side note, I normally use a length of clear tubing and a funnel to refill the tranny, keep adding oil 'til it spills out the fill hole (fool proof).

Thanks for all the help. I will be buying a funnel and tubing this week. How big is the fill hole, just to make sure the tubing I get isn't too big.

1/2" inside diameter will work.

One more question, is the drain/fill plug on the driver or passenger side?

This is the transmission fluid changing thread in the FAQ at the top of this forum.

In that FAQ Thread you can find out many things. Please use it next time. It's pretty much the same for D/B

GM Syncromesh is also a great choice for replacement.
