Default How to change a timing belt

I just picked up a car with 213 000Kms and I have no idea if the timing belt has been changed, so I am thinking of changing it myself.

How hard is it to change it and how long will it take? Should I change the water pump too? Do I need a timing gun? Where should I get the parts for it from? Honda or is aftermarket ok?

What else needs to be changed and attended to when the timing belt is changed?

I am downloading a helms manual and hopefully it gives me the full instructions on how to change it, however I would appreciate any input that you guys have on this.

Thank you.

Gotta love how people come on here and ask for help but give no information what so ever about the engine there talking about and what car it is in.

Just go out and buy yourself a manual for the the engine you have and follow it. And just for the record, no you will not need a timing light to set Mechanical Cam timing, a timing light is to set the Ignition timing.

Get an OEM timing belt, water pump, and tensioner from Honda. Then read that helms manual.

Sorry, its a 2000 Civic Hatchback DX SE with I believe a D16Y7 engine.

What does the tensioner do? Does it need to be set/adjusted or does it automatically tension the belt?

You use the Tensioner to put Tension on the belt once you have it installed. It won't self adjust because there is a 14mm bolt in the center of the pulley and once it tightened down the tensioner stays in place. Belts usually will not stretch like chains do. A service manual will explain how you set the tension so I am not going to explain it.

I just read the manual and it says to change the timing belt every 168 000kms. So I guess I will wait until 300 000 to change it. By that time I should have enough money for an engine swap hopefully.

The HELMs manual I have gives the most useless information on how to adjust timing tention.

If the belt has not been changed before and you wait you could be heading for disaster if the belt breaks you will bend valves.

Dude, 168,000kms is 105,000miles. Check your conversions. It's NOT 1.78 mile = 1kms

The correct conversion is:
1 Mile = 1.6kms

No you don't need a timing gun, don't mess with the distributor at all

I wouldn't use the word "will". I have seen and replaced T-Belts on several D16Z6 engines, two SOHC Accord engines and they had not bent any valves from the broken T-Belt. Doesn't mean you won't bend valves but I don't think saying you "will" bend valves is appropriate. However, I am not recommending anyone run past the service interval which will eventually lead to a broken T-Belt, the belt should be replaced when due so that you don't ever have to deal with a broken T-Belt.

Ironically, that thread gives ZERO information about adjusting pulley tension lol.
