Default How to build a Engine B/D series?

ive heard alot of people building engines and sticking them
into their cars and im so bedazzled at how ppl can do that,

the question im askin is
how exactly do i build a engine from block to head?

like how to install the crankshaft or add pistons/rods
and installin the Head of the engine.... how do you learn
how to build engines? instead of takin them to shops
and have people charge you 1 hell alot of money jus
to do the swap....

seems like a noob question, but i can use as much
help as i can possibly get. thank you~

That's a very very very vague question man. The only way you can gather that kind of knowledge is to actually tear a few motors down and put them back together. No matter how many books you read or websites you're on nothing beats hands-on experience, especially with the automotive industry. If you need some help, the Hayne's/Chilton's manuals can help out a lot since they have step by step illustrations and pictures to help you along.

believe me i have the haynes manual and read thru it a couple times,
but it doesnt explain how i should build my short block
i got a B18 LS bare block with a crankshaft in my garage,
and the nex step im tryin to figure out is what i should do nex?
Fuel pump, water pump, pistons, rods, bearings? not sure what
im suppose to do, i have another LS longblock with no crankshaft,
i wanted to pull the pistons and rods out of that one, but not sure how i should
do it, any help would be appreciated

1 bare block + 1 Short block with no crank shaft = 1 complete Short block
just need to know how to take parts apart and reapplying them back
into the right places

Some books do help. If you are trying to put a completely stock block back together then a Helms manual is what you need. That is the same thing your dealership mechanics use when they get in a pinch.

I have read a few books and most of the ones I keep explain more complicated things then just putting a regular motor back together.
If you are using the oem equipment that came out of that motor you should be able to figure it out with a good helms manual. Will you make mistakes? Most likely. Will you learn from them? Definately.

Most people learned and still do learn by trial and error. It can get expensive learning this way but I assure you that a mistake made at your expense will only happen once.

I can say that I spent the money I saved by doing my own work on tools, tools, and a few more tools. Now when I save money I buy things to store my tools in and on more tools.

I wish you luck and say to you that if you apply yourself to doing this then you too can and will be able to do most of the work by yourself.

Thanks, im plannin to build a b18 block and add eagle rods and high compression pistons and a sandwich plate for the compression patterns and stick a b16 head hand built
with the right cam gears and ratios added for a LS-V set up, thats my original plan
but building up stock blocks is a goal of mines, in the import scene here, i can build them and make money fast and quick, thats why being able to do things like that can actually profit alot in the long run

but where can i buy a helm manual?

And be careful especially just starting out. Thats great if you can make some money but if something goes wrong are you gonna be able to stand behind your work and answer questions others are gonna ask?

If a motor kabooms are you gonna be able to fix it or replace it if its your fault? On your dollar?
Thats why the dealer usually replaces complete blocks or heads instead of having their techs rebuild them on the spot. LIABILITY!
I am not trying to discourage you from doing this. Merely trying to open your eyes as to what CAN be involved and expected down the road.

You should try to build a d-series even if its just take it apart and putting it back together to see how it is. And see how you did. And then move on to something bigger and better and build it completely.

Basically how I started. Replaced bearings in a D just to take one apart and stuff. Already had experience disassembling and reassembling but just to check specs and different things.
Then Bought a B16 and did vavle adjustments and weird things to it.
Then built a poormans R basically from scratch.

Now I have an H2B and never looked back. H series motors all the way.
Unless I can convince the wife into a V6 swapped civic that has either no hood or a big *** hole in the hood. haha.

I do it to stay ahead of the curve in my area and to spank S2000's at the track on test and tune nights.

Plus the neon, wrx and sti guys don't talk alot of **** anymore when they can't shake me that well. And beating a V8 is a site that is better seen first person.

Well honestly I'm glad he asked the question cause I am in the same boat. Just picked up a d15b7 to take apart and put back together. Hope it works of for me. But all my relatves and friends that grew up around cars and building them, they all pretty much say "you can't do anything untill you get your hands dirty".
