Default how bad is an exhaust leak?

i have a stock 97 civic HX (my daily driver) and it has an exhaust leak somewhere. it passed smog fine and everything, but it's just a little loud (annoying). It's not too bad, but i was wondering if an exhaust leak would affect gas milage? that's my only real concern, i can deal with teh noise.

TIA guys

Thats wierd, I'm pretty sure that the Smog shops can tell you have an exhaust leak and would fail you because of it.......but to the point, yes an exhaust leak can cause your mileage to go down. It can lower your low-end torque, causing you to add more gas to accelerate

I dunno, they were some shady middle eastern gas station owners (sorry don't mean to hate) and they told me that it would take 30 min for smog. So a friend picks me up, and they call me saying my car was a test only. And supposedly they could bring it to another shop who could do it. I said ok on the phone but when I got there, I asked them to show proof it was test only and they said they have no way of showing that. I think they may have lied to me to charge me more, I dunno.

Anyway back to the point, I usually try not to get on the gas, I don't think I really step on it more since I try to keep my fuel milage as good as possible.

THanks for the help guys

well, yes for regular driving, depending on how bad the leak is, the leak will cause you to lose mpg and a little bit of torque
