transmissions are generally the same. B series trans will only with on a b series engine. Same goes with a d series trans...will only mate with a d series engine. Only variation is the gear ratios. Generally they will come complete with the engine...just make sure the listing says "tranny included" in the posting. Make sure you post complete info on your other post so people can help you make sure you got all part you need for your swap (year/vehicle)

I mean this in the nicest possible way, but it doesn't seem like you know too much yet. I would recommend doing a lot of reading and research before diving into engine swaps/building. I wouldn't do an ls-vtec if you haven't done a ton of research because they can be very unreliable if not built well. Check out the B18C, best bang for buck b series period.

I was refering to posting your car stats in your other thread, as others were asking. How much into turning wrenches are you?

B16 OR GSR period.
LS gears are disappointing especially with a vtec motor.

Thats right. B16 and ITR trannys are the same except the FD. That FD does make a world of defference though. Some b16 trannys came w/ lsd, some did not just depends on the part number. NO gsr trannys in the states (usdm) came with LSD.

USDM ITR and B16 have the same FD. 98+ JDM and some UKDM ITR had a 4.785 FD with GSR 4/5.

Usdm itr has 4.4 final drive and b16 has 4.2. They are not the same.

FYI...
99+ Si coupe and 94+ LS share the same final drive - wacky! All 'R' trans are LSD equipped. SiR models have optional LSD. US GSR are non-LSD.
JDM SiR/SiG has optional LSD. non LSD. Excellent gas mileage though! Same gearing as 92-01 hydro SiR/ITR/CTR but in cable form. Optional LSD. Y1's have optional LSD. non LSD non LSD

*debatable disclaimers
• There is noteable bickering on the net about the S1/J1/Y1 B16 transmission gearing. It mainly revolves around the 5th gear. I find it a waste of time to whine over the 5th gear being too tight or too long of gear. Big deal - it's only 5th gear! My tranny specs were gathered from the Revspeed civic/integra bible(s).

The 4.266 final drive is a debatable spec. If you look in a Helms manual for the 99+ Si Coupe, you will see that 4.266 is the final drive spec. Eddy Lin has found that to be false - he physically took a 99+ Si tranny apart and counted the final drive teeth which calculated to a 4.40 final drive ratio. So, yeah..it's debatable, but I believe it to be a 4.40, even though the Helms manual could be (and probably is) wrong.

• According to my resources, the Y1 + YS1 cable tranny's, are the only two that came with optional LSD's in Japan.

• There's a debate over the 5th gear ratio, in the J1 transmission. Whether or not it's a shorter or longer ratio gear. I personally don't care, but what I have up on here is what I believe it is, and what I've learned from my sources..
Not that it's a big deal or anything....

• US market did not receive any LSD equipped cable tranny's.

• ANY B-series tranny (cable & hydro) will mate up to ANY B-series engine block: B16A/B17A/B18C1+5/B18A+B/B20.
Just make sure that you use the correct clutch, flywheel, & intermediate shaft when mating the trans.

• Lastly, a lot of people think that you can tell a tranny's gear ratio by the tranny code, which is false!.

• The tranny code ONLY tells you what chassis the tranny orginally came from - not what gears are inside of it.
Click here for steps on how to check a tranny for LSD.

B-Series | Gear Ratios - RPM to MPH/KM Ratio Tests
I had the chance to perform gear ratio testing on some of the B-series transmissions listed below.
Around 4000rpm is where I took note of the RPM's vs. MPH to determine where the ratio's differ between eachother.
Sorry about some of the speeds being KM's. Some of our cars have a Japanese gauge cluster.
You can convert KM-MPH down below at your convenience or conduct your own on-road tests..
Some of you may experience different results in your own on-road tests and that is because of differnt variables.
These variable may include: wheel & tire size, and gauge cluster calibration (honda speedometers are known to be off about +/- 5mph).
The 'BS (Blacksheep) Ratio' was my previous gearing/speed ratios, until my car got stolen!

Tranny Type Y1 w/LSD S1 J1 BS Ratio*

1st @ 4000 RPM 38 km 30 km 30 km 18-19 mph
2nd @ 4000 RPM 48 km 48 km 50 km 28-29 mph
3rd @ 4000 RPM 68 km 68 km 73-74 km 40 mph
4th @ 4000 RPM 88 km 90 km 92-93 km 53-54 mph
more on the way...

5th @ 4000RPM 108-110 km 110 km 111-112 km 72-73 mph

Final Drive Equipped 4.266 4.400 4.400 4.785

Enter a number in either text field, then click outside the text field to get a result.

MPH: = KM/H:

Also, check out additional conversions HERE

*BS gear ratio's consist of Hydro B16 1-4th gears, GSR 5th, and the 4.785 final drive.
My usual freeway speeds maintained -- 4500rpms @ 80mph.

There is a lot of bad info there.

B16A2 is 4.40 FD. I know this from counting the teeth on every gear of every trans I work on. The 4.266 came from a misprint in the Helms manual.

Any doubt can be taken care of by comparing the B16A2 countershaft P/N to the GSR and ITR.
