Default Honda Del Sol Dirt Car Need Transmission advice

I have a 94 Del Sol Vtec I am using for Dirt Circle track racing. I currently have to shift between 2nd and 3rd gear I want to be in one gear the whole way around. Preferably 2nd gear. We run at around 45-70MPH on the track I currently have to shift at around 55-60MPH. I was told a transmission from a Honda Civic LX or DX would solve my problems.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes 4 Cylinder Stock car racing is becoming very popular in the NorthEast USA.

I think the taller gears of the USDM CX might be better suited. More top speed per gear, slower initial acceleration.

What RPM do you get to though? The D15B7 only goes to 6500 rpm so it caps out right around 100 KPH in second on the DX tranny. Not sure your speed with the DX tranny at 7200 RPM. You might prefer the taller gearing of the USDM CX since you are using the weaker CX/DX/LX tranny. It won't get up to speed quite as fast but once going will definitely have higher top speeds in all gears.

Del Sol VTECs have B16A's in them. OP...is this a Si model or a VTEC model? The Si has a VTEC equipped engine. But the VTEC model has a DOHC VTEC engine.

Do you have the DOHC or SOHC engine?

It is the DOHC Vtec model. From what I have heard people like the tranny that comes in this car for drag racing. We have a rolling start so a drag racing tranny is not what I need. I need single gear speed from 45-70MPH. And if I have to shift from 1st to second during the start that is fine. We start at 20-30MPH.

Integra LS tranny is what you want for that.

94EG8 knows his trannies pretty well as well as Honda's in general.

Do some google searching on Integra LS transmission and I'm sure you will get the proof you are seeking.

It's the longest geared transmission available that will bolt up to that engine. 2nd gear is good for 72MPH +/- a couple of MPH depending on what size tires you're running.

Play with this if you want to fine tune based on tire size and such: http://www.zealautowerks.com/transcalc.php

I concur with the LS trans being the longest geared B series civic/integra trans. You want one from a 94-01 integra LS. 8200RPM means right around 75mph in 2nd.

The GSR trans is the "medium" legged trans. With a 8200RPM rev limit, it should be good for about 68ish mph in 2nd. It won't give yoy as much of a RPM drop between gears as compared to the LS trans. So...look into a GSR trans also.

The B16/ITR trans has the shortest B series gearing. That's what you currently have. About 62mph in 2nd gear @ 8200RPM.

RPM drops don't matter for circle track racing, you only shift once, from 1st to 2nd, that's it, after that you keep in 2nd gear for the whole race. You want something that's almost hitting the rev limiter on the straightaways.

you cant use any stock civic transmission, you heard wrong. reason is your civic came equipped with a b series, and every other 92-00 civic/del sol (exc 99-00 si) came with a d series engine. the motors/transmissions do not work together. the longest geared b series transmission is a b18b1 ls transmission. since i imagine youll blow up parts, you might be best off selling your current engine and transmission and installing a regular civic d series setup. parts for them are a dime a dozen. b series engines, and especially transmissions lately are much much more expensive.

Thanks for the info guys. After researching the LS tranny I was just told I need an LS Hydro does this make sense and are they all the same?

Also will my ECU be fine with the change up?

Yes, LS Hydro (as opposed to cable). Stock ECU is what you want unless you change the engine.

I believe the B series trannies require a press to do gear swaps. Where a full tranny swap can be done on jack stands as a worse case scenario.

No press required - The gears will literally fall off one of the shafts, and they're held onto the other shaft with a nut. Remove the nut, they'll fall off.

this was my understanding of it. You can get a high quality synchro and gear, and keep a shorter 1st.

IV heard of people doing this with 5th so I dont see why 2nd wouldn't work the same way. Perhaps you need to take extra gears off vs 5th which is at the end, but I think you would just need to take 1st too.

Uh, it's a little bit more complicated than that. The LS and GSR mainshafts are the same, but the ITR mainshaft has a different part number. On top of that, the LS and GSR countershafts have different part numbers. I don't have the shafts laying around to compare, but given differences in bearings, synchros, sleeves, and forks, getting an LS and GSR transmission hybrid to "play nice" is nowhere near the simplicity of just swapping 5th.

2nd gear doesn't swap because the mainshaft gear is cast into the mainshaft (the same is true for 1st) But beyond that most of the gearing differences are due to the final drive anyway.

Well I have never bought a tranny before so if one of you guys could point me to a reliable trans to buy that would be great. I have a buddy that said he would swap it for $150 labor.

One thing I forgot to mention is I have a Quaife LSD in the current transmission do you think that will swap into the LS trans?
