Honda Civic CV boot cracked
Guys,
couple of days ago i had been to a regular check up on brakes for my honda civic 97 and the mechanic told that the cv boots on the outer right front side of the care has a crack and he suggested to replace with in a week. The totoal cv shaft has to be replaced as it is more labor to replace just the boot and they would not do the boots even if i opted for. The estimate was for $280.
My point is i never had a problem and i just went for a preventive check up and instead of replacing the boots alone this guy suggested a bigger expense.
Is that a better option ? I always believe "don't fix when it is not broken" and also if that part is purchased it will not be of the same quality as the original part that came with the car. Don't you folks agree ?
So, I need your valuable advice ? I hear no sounds or anything while driving ? I live in new england so running the car like this in the snow might damage a lot and might incur a lot more expense ?
thanks for all the advices

just go to autozone and buy a remanufatured axle and do it yourself. Really easy job
can be done in like 45 min by a first timer. It will be like $65 after you return the old axle.

Re: Honda Civic CV boot cracked (ABK)
Mechanic is trying to rip you off most likely. How many miles are on your car, and do you know if your axles were ever replaced? If you don't need a new axle, don't buy a new axle. Unless of course your CV boot is ripped open and the axle is exposed, you are just wasting your money.
You should replace your CV boot ASAP if it is cracked, (just buy one at an auto parts store and save yourself a ton of money), but unless your car has 100,000+ miles on it and the factory axles, don't bother replacing them.
