Default Homemade Cold Air Intake? Does It Work?

I've been reading up on some home made cold air intake systems that people have made from a variety of different ABS pipe and a K&N 12" cone filter attached at the end. I know that it’s the most practical thing in the world, but it does seem like the people who made them done a good job, and it only coasted them 1/4 of what an after market cold air intake system would cost. The model that the intake was made for was a Volkswagen Golf and it had a steep by step procedure on how to do it: http://www.koken.org/phillip/CAI/

I was just wondering if any one has ever tried it, or am I just being a complete idiot and forget the whole thing. Any Info would be appreciated!

In my opinion...

Cheapo ebay intake > Scraped together BS intake

end up costing about the same with less work
Or you can try this shenanigans https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1354835

when I bought my sol the previous owner had a homemade intake...but he just rippedout the orignal black box where the filter goes, and put an aftremarket cone filter... it was loud and sounded good, but then I just went on ebay and got a CAI from there...HUGE difference, the sound wasn't as loud (but still loud) but when I hit vtec it sounds gorgeous, and I felt a big increase in power. Long story cut short just go get an ebay CAI, it'll cost you less then $50 for sure!
