Default hole in gas tank? easy to patch or replacement?

so I was following Deshlong's DIY on the low fuel light and in the process of trying to get the sender out, i managed to punch a hole in the tank. there was a bunch of tar like crap on it and after scraping as much off as i could, carb cleaner seemed to make it more fluid. it was fighting this tar that i punched in the wrong spot trying to get the locking ring off the sender. I tried plumbers putty and a 5 min epoxy on the hole but no mater what i use it falls off and i start to smell to gas again. i even tried a screw with a rubber washer thing on it but in the end the rubber cracked and the smell came back. (that's why it looks like a screw hole now. pic below)

EDIT: Oh yea to please RonJ@HT: Car is a 95 DX hatch.

what can i do to fix this w/o buying a $2-300 tank if they even still make it? i know majestic has it for $325 but that's a lot of labor to fix one little hole.

You can still buy the tank new from Honda, I just bought one a few months ago. I think that can be fixed though, it can be welded, but you'll have to find someone that really knows what they're doing to avoid any fires and/or explosions.

Is J-B Weld resistant to water and/or gasoline?
When fully cured, J-B Weld is completely resistant to water, gasoline, and about every other petroleum product or automotive chemical. For wet-surface or submerged water or gasoline repairs, try our SteelStik or WaterWeld.
To get it to stick, you will first have to prep the surface around it with some sand paper and then a wipe down with non-chlorinated brake cleaner. The brake cleaner evaporates residue free. Then you will have to give the JB Weld (cold weld epoxy) a good 36 hours to cure. They say 24 hours but giving an extra 12 hours is to be be extra sure it's fully cured before having gas hit it.
