Default HKS intake question

Let me preface this post by saying I really don't know that much about intakes. I have a stock (motor wise) 95 hatch DX. I had a no name CAI that came with the car and I took it off because I got a stock integra airbox cheap. I recently got an HKS filter really cheap, I think its a super mega flow. anyway, I was wondering what the best method would be to set it up, I've seen that some people who run the DIY icebox intake, but then I'd have to buy the k&n for $80. So I was wondering is there any advantage to running the HKS filter in the stock airbox without the cover, but then extending the bottom of the airbox like the icebox? Or would this effect be negated by the open airbox, also would it be more like a short ram since it would still be under the hood, or more like a CAI since it would extend behind the bumper. This is just my DD, nothing too special I was going for short ram because I've heard better on the low end and possibly better MPG.
