High Revvin my D

How do D-series motors compare with B-series motors on high-revving damage?

Re: High Revvin my D (B18C1 Del Sol soon)

I think it would depend too much on what motors you were talking about. A SOHC D series from an Si probably wouldn't suffer as much damage than say a DOHC B18B because its a mo betta motor as far as engineering, build quality and materials.

Mostly I'm talking about damage to valves/springs/cams etc. up there in the top part.

Re: High Revvin my D (B18C1 Del Sol soon)

what constitutes high revving. On a b series it is easier to rev them high than on a d-series, kinda like 8200 rom on a d is the equivalent of 9200 on a b, understand?

Just curious, are you basing that analogy on piston speeds resulting from rod/stroke ratio?

I have never actually bothered to look up the r/s of a d series.

to build a dohc killer your sohc must be high reving

And your car has to be as light as possible.

Re: High Revvin my D (B18C1 Del Sol soon)

you don't have much to high rev. you have stock internals. if you keep "high revving" your motor, its going to break down very soon.

are you talking about high reving as in past the redline or below it?

Anything below rev cut won't hurt it.

To my understanding, the B7 valvetrain is probably good to 7300 or so and the Z6 to around 8,000. However, I wouldn't rev it that high unless I upgraded my springs and retainers.

The D15B's has a R/S of 1.59
The D16's have a R/S of 1.52
The JDM D15B has a R/S of 1.62

FYI...the B18B's r/s ratio is 1.54 and the B18C's is 1.58. The B16 has the best R/S ratio with a 1.75

The D15's are better for high revving than the D16's, but if you're going to be revving it up to or past 8 grand, you need upgraded valvetrain, rod bolts, ECU, and a camshaft that makes power that high.

well thats good. soo hypothetically speaking of course, if i need the extra revs for a quater mile it would be realitivly safe to shift around 7500-7800 without valve train upgrades?

I have a D16z6 btw

no, more like 6900.

According to bone, the stock valvetrain takes a shit around 8200 RPM. Also, the springs are apparently okay it is just the retainers that need to be upgraded. In any case, if one is going to be taking past the 7350 fuel cut they should get upgraded springs and retainers.

On a stock camshaft though, it is worthless to take it past 7000.

Bauley, Do you knw of any aftermarket cams for the Y5? I really wanna build mine up, but there's just no market for that motor it seems.

There are none, I believe you gotta contact like crower or crane and have them custom make you one to your specs.

R/s is 1.52 on a D16Y8, not sure for the older model but it's probably the same or very close to it.

EDIT: ehh... someone beat me to it.

hehe i just got a chuckle at this thread title. "high revvin my d." that is funny, kind of like when i tell my girlfriend "shut up bitch, suck on my d!"

that is all...
