i got a used civic vx that has 230,000 plus miles on it and the oil i use is regular 5w30 not synthetic. every couple of weeks i need to add 1/2 a quart of oil or more. My friend mechanic told that me the motor is still good and its due to blow by every engine has it.

I was wondering that if is it best to go to synthetic 5w30 make difference. and will the synthetic give the car more power? what numbers oil is best my high mileage engine?

throw a little thicker oil in the mix and see if that helps?

oh and by that i mean do an oil change and use thicker oil, don't just dump thicker oil in there with the other oil.

Synthetic will burn quicker, have you tried a bit of oil stablizer? Stuff is thicker then ****.
my friends da burned 1.5-2 quart a week, stablizer got it down to like a half.
Sythentic also is more likely to find dired up seals and start to leak.

Keep runing the regular in it.

Synthetic is wayyy slippier and thinner so you will actually burn more oil by that I mean it'll find all the little gouges and bad seals and will slip by them easier resulting in more smoking and more oil consumption

For older engines with 200K+ miles, I have used the high mileage formula from Pennzoil and it seemed to help with oil burns.. I don't recommend synthetic though. Like others have said, it's just thinner and slipperier so it's going to uncover the engine's problems.

Continue to run what the engine has always had in it. Engines get used to the type of oil and sometimes dont like it when you switch..


I have ran high milage oil in my civic (206k) but i will continue to run castrol synthtic blend 5-30 which i have always ran.

In my higher mileage cars I use 20w50. I know it's a little thick but It'll slow down your oil leaks. And yes like others were saying synthetic is a bad idea with your car right now.

when I was still in a d-series past 120k burning oil, my mechanic reccomended this oil as well as STP oil treatment.

put 3 quarts of normal oil and 1 quart of lucas oil stabilizer. Its super thick and really helps

use a high mileage oil, 10w30 during the winter and 10w40 during the summer....stick with conventional, synthetic will NOT help. and using 1/2 quart every couple of weeks IS NOT normal. it is also not nessesarily blow-by, it could just be that your oil control rings are worn and not removing as much oil from the cylinder walls as they should.......therefore leaving oil on the cylinder walls that gets burned with your fuel/air mixture.

lucky i didn't use synthetic oil idk know that it will burn easier a teacher told me that it would last longer than conventional oils n i always taught it would be beter.
so what is the best oil stabilizer to mix with it is it good to use 10w30?? what u used?

It can last longer between oil changes yes, better yea it can be, but it just depends.

I always used lucas, However i dont run 10w30 in mine.

I don't know why but I've been running 5W30 Mobil 1 Synt. with Lucas oil Synthetic Staibilizer on my D for a while and haven't had any issure or leak on my car. Syntec does not experience Temp break downs like Conventional. but If you've never used syntec I wouldn't recommend it like everyone has been saying.

everybody thats puting in the thicker oil's is gonna blow those motors, you have tiny ports in the motor for the oil to circulate through the motor, always use synthetic oils, these are high reving engines geez, useing a thicker oil will make the motor work harder and the harder a motor with high millage has to work is power lose and could lead to breaks, if you have leaks when useing synthetic oils its because you need to do repairs, honda engines aren't retarded big v8's that can handle the thicker oil, even toyota's v6 uses 5w30

contrary to popular belief, synthetic oil is no "thinner" then the next oil. it is not more likely to burn faster, and the only reason it can cause leaks is because it is such a good detergent, that it can wash away deposits that once kept the conventional oil in. way back in the day there was a compatibility problem with syn. oil in some engines because of seals. but not for a long time. I had a conversation with a man that engineered oils for Mobil for 30 years.

its kinda hard to say, my personal advice would be to stick with conventional oil......it will do EVERYTHING your engine needs.
