High idle after start up

I did a search for about 30 minutes and found no help. I have noticed for the last week or so after I start my car in the morning, or after it has been sitting for a while. This sitting time is at school in a covered parking structure. It idles at about 1,000 - 1,300 then after a while it goes down. Im assuming that it is normal to have a slightly high idle after a cold start up, but this seems a bit rediculous. I havent done anything to it recently other than check the oil and fill it up with gas. It's a stock 96 ex coupe D16y8. And I have a extremely no0bish question here(flame all you want). I'm so lost on my chassis(sp) code I first thought it was EJ6 then EK8. What is it?Help, advice, and flames are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Check your TDC'ness. Mine does the exact same thing, and my timing belt is off a tooth or so.

Thank you very much. I have a slight feeling that my timing is off a little bit. Love your avatar by the way. "Tig 'ole bittes" I love that line. Anyone else?

I thought your chasis code was EJ8 correct me if im wrong but I though EJ8 covered all 96-98 civics, coupe and sedan, and please correct me if im wrong because i know my 98 coupe is an EJ8 but not 100% sure bout the rest

Thank you both, that helps me out very much. And any other suggestions on my idle problem? sohcvtec95, what about my IACV? What do you want me to do with it? Are you saying its broken, or what?

You could try cleaning the IACV: With the motor warmed up and running, use come t-body cleaner to spray into the IACV entry hole (you'll have to remove everything leading up to the throttle body to get to it). Just give it some quick blasts as this shit will want to make your engine stall (you'll have to throttle the engine).

Did this just come outta nowhere? Is it stock? What does the maintenance history look like (cap, rotor, plugs, wires, etc..)? How many miles?

The plugs, wires, rotor, and cap all do need to be changed. About 133,500 miles, it is stock. Also coming up on time for an oil change as well. Yes it did come out of nowhere, got in my car one morning started it and as I sat at a light I noticed some good vibration(stong, not bad just the engine moving) and I looked at the tach and it was at about 1,300-1,500 rpm. Also I noticed today as it got up to operating temp the idle speed went down to about normal 450-600 whatever it should be. So any thing else? My best guess is it just has to do with warming up the car faster but it seems a bit rediculous. Isnt that what the thermostat is for? Could this possibly be a bad thermostat and the ecu is trying to compensate for it not doing its 'warm-up job'? http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif

Re: High idle after start up (DOHC4life)

If the cap, rotor, plugs and wires (and probably the O2 sensor) all have 133k on them - woo lordy thats A LOT of miles on those components.

plugs - every 15k
cap/rotor - every 30k
wires - every 45k
O2 sensor - I replace mine every 75-80k (thats about when my gas mileage starts to take a hit)

Now, those are the Helms 'severe' schedule replacement timeline - but as you can see, 133k is quite extreme comparatively. So your problem may be solved with a tune up.

Also, throw some t-body cleaner through the IACV - I had to on mine at around the 150k mark (it froze on me) - its been working fine ever since.

Re: High idle after start up (EE_Chris)

Well I can tell you that the cap, rotor, plugs, and wires have been changed many times before. I dont know about the 02 censor though. I was thinking that I should replace it just because I dont know how old it is. And as for the t-body cleaner, any auto parts store will have that right? Thanks for all the help guys, anymore suggestions?
