Default High Engine temp @ red lights

I have a 99 ex, 5 speed 112,000 miles. Every time i stop at a red light regardless of temp outside my engine sky rockets to a hair under the red. As soon as i go it drops back down. What i've heard is my fan might be 2 speed, one for cruising and a higher speed for sitting still. I popped my hood and fan is spinning. So could this be a fan speed controller issue, radiator fluid????? i don't have a clue

so for sure you know that your fan is spinning. the radiator fan right? not the condensor fan.

if that's the case i would replace the thermostat, then go from there.

make sure radatior fan is working. i do not think the thermostat is bad since it cools when he starts moving.

Radiator fan for sure.

Turn off the AC when you pop the hood to check.

kk i went out, turned on the car and let it run. as soon as temp gauge started climbing the radiator fan did turn on as did the condensor fan. but temps kept the same.... only turning off a/c kept temps lowER but still well above normal.... any other ideas?

You sure the wires aren't switched on the fan? If they're in backwards and it's spinning backwards it won't really help.

Low on coolant. Check it. $5 says that when the engine's cold and you pop the radiator cap you can't see fluid in there. Same thing happened to mine. Burning coolant. Mine's because of a head gasket that's waiting to go out.

Check the coolant, change the t-stat, also check the wiring on the coolant temp. sensor, and either fix or possibly replace. you're symptoms sounds exactly like mine use to be. Car would bury on H when stopped for an extended light or sitting at idle somewhere. At driving speeds, stayed at cool/normal temp. One wire split off of the connector for the coolant temp sensor. Just a thought.

I had this same issue, turns out the coolant was old. Changed the coolant and never had a problem since then.
