ok you guys are confusing two different things. the diffuser is the piece of metal that covers the end of the bulb. the shield for hids is an adapter that makes it so that there isn't any upward reflection of light.

edit:

that metal adapter is the shield.

This is what keeps from blinding everyone on the road which he is talking about.

My Gourmet Garage kit came with the shields already on. The kit is great and doesn't have the high beam glare.

h4 is a bulb used in stock civics, if you look at that shield you notice 3 notches on it (all may not be visable) that allows you to use a d2s or d2r bulb in stock housings. the d2s and d2r has a smaller base and are stock for hid equipped cars. the shields are used to create a nice cutoff line so it doenst blind everyone down the road while illuminated the road directly in front of you (and not the trees and sky)

d2s bulbs are usually used with projectors while d2r bulbs have a metal shield placed on the bulb itself; usually used in reflective housings.

thats the place. your bulbs are kept in place with a wire stay inside the headlight housing. the adapter sits in between the housing and the bulb. so the wire keeps the bulb in and the bulb is held in place with the adapter. once you get the bulb out you will see. I would recomend taking the headlight off the car as it will be easier to work with and you will be less likely to **** something up.
