Default HID conversion question

hey all. have a few questions on the HID kit for my 99 civic.
what's the going price for it?
i know a few companies make it, which one is more reliable?
is it true that HID conversion kit is only low beam??
is it worth all that money?
are there any alternatives besides spending $50 - $100 on pias or those after market super white bulbs that burn out every 4-7 months??

thank you all in advance for your replies.

To answer your questions in the order of which they were asked:

$350-$600+
Any kit with a Phillips ballast has good/reliable HIDs
yes, but only if you use a dual filament bulb (like the H4 - you lose the highbeam, but it's not like you need them)
yes
supposedly, some of the companies have a "lifetime warranty" on the bulbs if they happen to burn out - but still worth it over PIAA bulbs

My $.02

From what i heard, the housing of a regular leadlight that was designed for a filament bulb would not benefit from HID....i could be wrong though....any inputs??

thanks newman. do you know where i can find the dual filament bulbs? and would it be possible to fit them to the balasts from H4 conversion? meaning, if i get the H4 HID kit, for example, and just buy those dual filament bulbs, would they just replace the single filament bulb that would come with the H4 conversion?
thanks again.

They would have to be dual filament HID bulbs, not halongen. These are just coming to the market now, so they are probably a little more pricey.

As far as the housings go, it isn't so much that they won't benefit for HID, but rather because they were not designed for HID, they tend to throw alot of light in the wrong places cause glare for oncoming drivers.

HID has no filament. It uses a mixture of gas (including xenon) to light up between two electrodes. You will lose your high beam for H4 application. A Bi-Xenon is in development but not yet reliable.

I have two pairs of HID bulbs from Phillips for 9006 application without the ballast. One pair for reflector and the other for projector. If you want, I can give you a good price. You would still need to get your own ballasts.

http://www.spwusa.com/manu.asp?dept=11&manu=105 we sell a plug-and-play hid conversion which replaces any of the popular bulb applications 9003,4,6,7 and H1,3,7...the hid is available in a single or servo actuated dual beam blue or purple hue....extremely reliable and BRITE. german ballasts...its true that the standard head lite housings are not the best for hid due to the fact that it difracts differently than a housing designed for hid BUT...these kits are designed with that in mind, as they are available for all applications.

I've got a genuine HONDA set of HID's off of a wrecked TL Type S made for the 9006 and its got papers for lifetime warranty's on the lights..if anyone wants them or knows someone who does let me know and i'll sell them, i bought them from a local junkyard thinking i'd put them on my civic but the modifying is a bit harder than i wanted it to be..its totally possible tho!
