Hi, owner of car says he doesn't use power steering, no ps fluid
I am looking at a really nice 99' Civic EX with a GSR engine swap. The owner says it has power steering but he doesnt use it. I asked what he meant and he said that it just doesn't have any ps fluid in it.
To me this sounds bad. Like, I am pretty sure you are supposed to have ps fluid or you can damage the ps pump.

You would be correct. Check to see if it's got the belt on the power steering pump. If it does, the pump is probably trashed.

he says there is no squeel. And it is hooked up....
im reading about "looping the linjes and putting in a breather". What does this mean?
And the owner of the car says it steers fine and no problems. So I am trying to figure out how this is possible with no ps fluid in a power steer system.

i would be more worried about screwing the rack up then a stupid pump,
what the looping the lines and adding a breaher does it you can get rid of the ps and keep fuild in the rack and keep air out, thats the key to doing it right.
lots of people seem do to do its this way, just to lazy to do it the right way the first time, and end up ruining things.

It won't make any noise if there's no fluid in it until the pump starts to come apart. It'll probably whine if you do put fluid in it, and it may or may not provide assist. Depends on how long he's been running it that way. This is a power assist steering system, so the steering will work perfectly fine without the pump working, just with more steering effort. I had an old rust bucket geo storm that had a hole in the return line of the power steering so I just took the belt off. Drove it that way for about 20000 miles until i finally got rid of it. Was a pain to drive in parking lots but provided excellent steering feedback.

So it must have this looped lines method. He says it is 100% fine and working. He just doesn't want power steering so he said there is no ps fluid. The belt is on the pump though... I don't know...

If his line of thought to remove power steering was to simply not put fluid in the pump, I can only imagine that type of logic is going to leave you with a car full of problems.
Steer far away, indeed.

Yeah I wouldn't bother with this car.
The only good way to not have power steering without swapping in a manual rack is to loop the hoses on the steering column and remove the rest of the stuff.

what a ****ing idiot if its setup like that. Keep away from that car. becaues he is a retard. If you dont want power steering then you take the belt off the pump. But there is no reason to not want power steering, especially if u spent the time hooking it up in a swapped car. having no fluid in it is dumb as **** and will trash the steering system. Not only the pump but the rack aswell.

Well ill at least check it out. And if it seems really good ill take it for an inspection before I buy.
It has 150k on body and tranny (shifts perfect he said).
75k on gsr engine
Tien basic suspension
Pager alarm system
Spark controller
Vtec controller
And other small things.
Body looks and is claimed to be near perfect no rust.
He is asking 5700. What should I offer him?
Also does anyone know a good honda shop in Indianapolis where the car is located

I wouldnt pay more than 3200 for that car. But the owner seems fishy so have it checked out thoroughly before you get it.

yea the kid sounds like a real idiot. No fluid in his PS because he doesnt want to use it. And he has a VTEC controller, which we all know does **** all. and there is 150k on the body, and his tranny doesnt match the motor.
